Tyrese Hunter Entering the Transfer Portal - NIL Speculation

I think a lot of those folks pictured players getting a couple hundred bucks for a Saturday afternoon at a car dealer promo event or a player making a little coin from a commercial for a local veterinarian. I think most of the “good for college athletics” folks just didn’t have the foresight or the imagination to see how bad and stupid this would become.

The NCAA evolving and innovating with the changing times could have avoided this. Alas, the guys running that organization are making bank, and by wanting nothing to change, they helped usher in the dumbest of all changes.

Lol you have coaches making millions a year, billion dollar tv deals but the players should be happy with getting a few hundred dollars. They should get every dollar they can, great to see them finally be able to get what they deserve.

"I don't think anyone isn't saying they shouldn't be paid" - CoKane

Sorry CoKane, but the negatives are dizzying!

Look, it absolutely sucks if Hunter leaves, but the amount of “woe is me” in this thread for when one of our guys surprisingly transfers out when this forum has an entire transfer thread of people wanting to poach the top guys from mid-major schools is as ironic as irony can get. You can’t use the transfer portal to help build your own program from smaller fish and then cry wolf when a bigger fish does the same to you. It sucks when it happens to you, but that’s the game.
This is an excellent post. Very true. It’s tough when you are anywhere but the top of the food chain. However, it is sad to me that we have all gotten where we are. What is the purpose of college sports? I think it has drastically changed. I actually believe that change is often good. In this case / it is not.
So I am clear - I am 100.% for athletes getting more $. I am not for doing it in an unregulated mode.

I'll just never understand how we got to a place where the value of a totally free college education with enormous amenities for athletes is has zero value in terms of compensation.
These guys are not going on to a career in business, they're going to play pro basketball. The education provides zero benefit in terms of future compensation.

So it would appear to me we are pretty much where we were before all this. Some schools are willing to maneuver in the grey areas (i.e. school sponsored/funded NIL as opposed to boosters/businesses) whereas some aren’t. Daring the NCAA to adopt new rules or enforce existing ones is not exactly a new thing.

Agreed. How any one can look at the money coming into college football and basketball and not think the players deserve to be well paid is crazy to me.
I have said it 100 times. The problem isnt PAYING players, its BUYING players.

Paying them all a share of the millions doesnt impact competitive balance. Rich schools buying the best players from everybody else destroys the competitive balance.

Thats why pro leagues have salary caps, luxury taxes, etc.

This is simply wrong on a number of levels. Ninety-something percent will not go pro, or not make it if they do. And pro careers are generally short.

Thinking a college education provides zero benefit is laughable.

I do agree with this in principle. Guys will transfer in and out of teams and we need to get used to it. But for this particular situation, it's the process that feels rotten. If Hunter entered the portal and then teams started contacting him with interest, I don't have a problem with that. You are leaving a school on your own accord and then teams show interest. That's how it's supposed to work. The trouble I have with Hunter is that, by appearances, UNC is going after guys to entice them to enter the portal. It's a subtle difference, but I think it's important.

Of course, we don't know all the details. Maybe Tyrese told TJ a while ago and there's just a delay in paperwork. I just thought that we'd have seen something on social media if that were the case.

Yeah it's definitely losing its edge but I'd guess money still won't be a problem for those at the top and overall revenue for who ever is showing the games.

Bowl games are basically scrimmages with players opting out and portal entries will only happen earlier.

Basketball will continue to be a generally poor product as so many teams take most of the season to figure out how to play together. ISU was an exception to that this season but it won't always be that way.

I agree. I haven’t really liked the open season transferring but really don’t like paying players because I think it make the top teams even better while the other teams below them weaker.

Someone posted the one time non sit out transfer rule and I think that is a great step to curb this rapid movement of players. I also think if something can be done to curb this pay for pay by donors and shoe companies that would be welcomed as well.

This issue should have been addressed years ago and no one addressed it. Now players can get paid, but the payments aren’t associated with the university, which seems odd. The schools can still make the money but people outside the university has to pay the players.

**** NIL and **** all the people pre-NIL who said it would be good for college athletics (you know who you are). The truth is we let the lion out of the cage without any safety measures in place. There should have been rules, caps, contracts, etc. to help keep things in order before just saying "**** it" and having a free-for-all cluster****. I would think some of our old Cyclone greats who bleed cardinal and gold are probably disgusted with this whole new world.
The other thing to remember is that 90% of these players will never see more than a couple hundred bucks if that. This will divide locker rooms. The payments are for a few percent of the players. Might as well just let them turn pro and get rid of the rules about that.

Over time, it will kill interest in college sports, and long run start to kill the golden goose of media right deals.

We are only in the early stages here, but the logical progression is that with the "free" transfer rule and NIL, every transfer will have a price tag. Every new recruit coming out of high school will not be just comparing campuses and facilities, but their cash offers to sign. In time, every single player on a team will need to be paid according to their value to the team just to be there, or they will be elsewhere, and the understanding will be that every one of them will move once to get a better deal. It is an uncontrolled arms race now, I'm not even sure what the NCAA can do about it. They have no teeth, and they know it.

I don't know if you've followed college sports closely before, but there's not a lot of competitive balance even when the players aren't paid. We have this college football playoff where 4 teams are selected at the end of this year and it's really like 4 teams that get 3/4 spots every single year.

That was me. I said my GUESS was B10. I have zero inside info. Reason for my guess - b10 has lots of wealthy programs and donor base, he is from the b10 footprint, the b10 has struggled to compete at the highest levels recently. There are going to be donor bases who want to buy their way into being relevant. Do not read more into my opinion than what is there - just a guess.
Okay, but I see your point.

Is this supposed to be a bad thing?

Yep. It's one thing if we are the have nots. But if VCU is the have nots then LOL them

Right, this entire thread is really just this forum throwing a tantrum over one guy leaving and how this is now the end of all college athletics, when we've come out way ahead in the transfer market over the last 10+ years.

When I was a kid, MLB was the "national pastime" and exponentially more popular than pro basketball or the fledgling NFL.

Gradually, through free agency etc., I began to lose track of rosters, or even of who was playing for "my" team this year. At last, I reached the point where I rarely even watch the World Series any more.
There are other reasons for the decline of baseball, obviously, but I see trends here in college bb. that seem eerily familiar to me.
