The Timeout

Who said anything about a boycott?

We just witnessed what a team without Breece carrying it all on his back looks like…. not good. Easy for Manning and Purdy to look good when you have Breece. Or Montgomery.

That 3rd and 10 call was about as bad as I’ve seen. If that’s our idea of good football…. we’re in deep s**t folks.
If the coaches don’t care and aren’t even trying to win the game…. why should I be invested and still care??
I’m telling you that you shouldn’t care and should leave, live up to your statement!

I don't think coaching football is color-by-numbers. There isn't just one right way!

ISU could have saved 40 seconds by calling a TO on Clemson's 2nd to last possession. Probably more than half of coaches would have used the 3rd TO then. But our offense got the ball back with 2 minutes left. That should be enough for an efficient offense to drive the length of the field. Especially, with 1 timeout.

There were a number of other issues that caused ISU to lose this game. TO, fumbles (not lost) and lackluster punting were a few.

How much time did we end up wasting after the Kolar catch on 3rd down before he decided to use the last timeout? It showed 39 seconds when they finally stopped the clock and I swear he caught it with around 47 or 48.
That might not seem like alot of time but in fjst situation it's 20-25% of the remaining time wasted.

IIRC they also blew 20-25 seconds to move the ball 8 yards on the first two plays. I get you can't get out of bounds every play, etc, etc, but these small losses of time add up to putting far more pressure on the offense to get it all at once.

It was always going to take way to much time against a defense of that caliber to score. It takes so many downs with Brock running for his life. That’s a defense you can just hit a big play.

Also were getting owned on the line and missing Hutchinson, our only big play receiver.

You don’t like our OL? Maybe you should just leave?? And you think X is our only big play receiver? Maybe you should leave again? Okay? Sounds like you aren’t a true fan.

Yeah, that was the screen pass to Brock that wasted a ton of time. He acted like he wanted to go out of bounds then just cut back to the middle.

I’m more angry about MC having a meltdown and wasting a pointless timeout early in the half.

Time management has never been very good with him. Can’t have that.

Especially when half of your games come down to the final few minutes (and you coach for that to happen).

Let’s not forget when we ran the punt unit on the field with 4:30 to go and let the play clock get down to around 10 seconds before we punted…for someone who preaches winning in the margins, this staff makes a lot of small little dumb mistakes.

Urgency and purpose seem to be missing.
Honestly feels like all but one or two games a year the offensive gameplan is to play vanilla and "feel em out" for the first half/3 quarters. When the O-line is able to dominate the line of scrimmage it's fine and the offense looks great. But the coaches, especially Manning, need to come into the game with adjustments made for the the opponent and then readjust if needed.

For example, you won't beat Clemson by running through them. There are very few teams who can do that, and you need to know your team well enough to know Iowa State is not one of those teams that can reliably do that. I'm a bit long winded, but it feels like a different symptom of the same problem you describe.

We don’t seem to have any quick sideline throws in the playbook.
XH and Noel are both so dangerous with the ball in their hands, too. I'm not asking for bubble screens on 3rd and 6, but when the corners play off on first, throw a quick out for 5 or 6 yards and a chance for more if they can shake a defender.

Maybe it was a symptom of Brock not having elite arm strength, but I'm hoping there's more incorporated next season.

I lost interest in the outcome of this game at that point…. not in ISU football or ISU sports.

At that point, had we gone on to lose, I knew we only had ourselves to blame because we weren’t doing everything possible to win it. Even the announcers could not give one good possible reason for that play call.

They moved it back to 42. It read 46 when the ref blew the whistle to stop the play.
