Report: OU & Texas reach out to join SEC

And then we would make a conference of Washington State, Oregon State, Boise State, Utah, BYU, Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and Iowa State. Add in West Virginia if they have no where else to go along with Houston or Cincinnati for 16.

That would be way behind the ACC/SEC/BIG and just a leg up on the AAC. We will be in big trouble if this happens.

yeah, but they could have made more money by pitching schools like Oregon, USC etc to form a bigger conference and OU still would have been one of the top dogs. I mean they aren't having any trouble making the playoffs and this doesn't increase Texas's chance of making the playoffs. Bottom line is if you win enough games you will be considered for the playoffs no matter where you are. It has been shown as well that playing weaker schedules doesn't get you any points docked with the playoff committee.

I'm having a hard time believing there will be a true playoff. The super conference, SEC will be like the NFL. They won't have anything to do with the NCAA and will have the champion and playoffs set up with two to four divisions within the conference. All of the money will stay within the SEC and the rich will get richer. The rest of the college football landscape can either stick with the NCAA or create their own set of rules, but the Megaconference doesn't give two hoots about anybody else. Especially if they can pull Ohio State, Notre Dame and Clemson into the mix down the road.

This exactly. People thinking that the big players in each conference aren't setting the stage to maximize value are crazy. The bottom line is ISU, KU, and Okie St. are worth more than Vandy, Wake, BC, Rutgers, and Northwestern from a sports media perspective. Hell, look at the ACC per team payout, then consider what Clemson, ND and to a lesser extent FSU, UNC, UVa are worth. Being more valuable than the bottom of the ACC is a very low bar.

I'm not sure how all the GoR work, but if say 10/14 of the ACC are needed to dissolve and can the GoR, who's to say the top 10-12 of the conference don't do that? Hell, same goes for Big 10, SEC, and any conference.

None of these low men in their conferences should feel secure. On one hand you have everybody saying how cutthroat this is all going to be, but dismissing the idea that these conferences have a path to dissolve, dump a couple bottom feeders, and reconstitute a new league.

Even with the GoR if you don't think for one second Ohio State and Michigan are saying "hey, we want in on this action" you are crazy.

So I totally agree with you. Right now, it's us, KU, KSU, Okie State, Baylor, WVU and TCU. But that list is about to get way longer.

Well, see, 8-4 in the SEC, the greatest conference in the land, is equivalent to 1 or 2 losses in a lesser conference because of the supreme nature of the competition even if one of the losses is to Vanderbilt which is excusable because it's hard to stay focused all the time in the greatest conference in the land and sometimes great teams overlook certain opponents who just happen to be in the greatest conference in the land so a loss like that really doesn't matter or even count, so it's like 3 losses which is like going undefeated in any other conference when you're playing in the greatest conference in the land.
I was driving home Sunday morning listening to ESPN radio. The commentator described the new SEC as the "Greatest conference in history".

But ESPN holds the right to the ACC, so why wouldn't they either want the league to be successful or want to push towards the better schools to be folded into this so called super conference of 30 to 40 teams.

By allowing them to go to the Big 10, that would allow FOX sports to control those teams content. It really comes to down this is a war between Fox and ESPN and the Big 12 is just the first casualty of the fight.
By killing the Big 12 outright or significantly reducing the payout, ESPN has taken its best two assets, moving them into a league that will make them more money and also getting rid of the LHN that never made a profit.

The same reason you give for ESPN promoting the Big12's demise. Keep overall rights fees in check and lining the pockets of the OSU's, Bama, Texas and OU's of college football.

Clemson would be a great add for the SEC, but not really needed if OU and Texas jump on board. Think about it Auburn & Tennessee will be the 8th&9th best programs in the SEC. Whereas in the Big10, Tennessee & Auburn would be right there with Wisconsin as the 4th best program in the Big10. So the SEC and ESPN would love to have Clemson in the SEC, but they have 7 elite programs already. The Big 10 has to make a splash by adding the likes of Clemson, Notre Dame, UNC or FL State.

Then adding schools like ISU, KU, Virginia, NC State, GA Tech, etc. makes sense to build out a 20-24 team conference to maximize a conferences playoff teams.

It seems like this is incredibly shortsighted by Texas especially. The Big 12 caters to them, no way they would like playing second fiddle to Alabama in the SEC. I also don’t know how much success they could have considering they haven’t won the league in a while now.
Latest figures has Texas at $150 million, the number one program in revenues. Alabama is at $94 million, way down the list.
Would the SEC permit Texas to continue the LHN?

I will be shocked if they really last until 2025. The last line in that press release makes it seem like they're eying leaving as soon as possible

Same here. But watching their games for the next 4 years would be entertaining as hell with regards to away games, officiating, players jawing, etc.

Only way the Big 12 survives is if the other conferences choose not to expand.....if that's the case, go add some schools and stay together until 2025 simply to make OU and Texas honor the media rights agreement.

This is what I think will happen actually.

Seems some of the refs were Texas fans first. If anything were to happen with the refs, I see the officiating going in a direction to boost UT and OU. Remember, even though they are leaving, who has all the cash in the Big 12.

I think the B1G will talk to Texas and maybe OU individually, ND, PAC-12, and maybe the ACC. B1G will swing for fences prior to entertaining any option with Iowa State. All of these options have different levels of actually happening and different levels of negotiations.(Just my uninformed opinion of course.)

Said this in another thread (I think)...UT (AAU school) to the BIg Ten, and perhpas others. OU/OkSU to the SEC. This solves the bloody Oklahoma political issues. For the Big Ten, there are AAU options out there.

Who is the next Big 12 team to announce non-renewal????

No surprise here but that throws cold water on the Oklahoma State B1G report at least, as well as any chance that West Virginia might get a bid.

The only B1G options from the Big 12 are KU and us. The ACC is locked up for 15 years. I suppose Colorado might be a realistic option with KU though.

No one is really talking about what it would take to get out of the PAC-12. I don’t think CU is in a great spot right now from a funding standpoint.
