Who cares how much closer they are, they're still a mountain range and 2 time zones away from the majority of the conference.

Please respond as to why the PAC-12 would take a Non-AAU member in Kansas State.
Not sure if you noticed but Geography doesn't matter anymore. A small school in Omaha is in the Big East.
K-State had more viewers because they had more success under a certain coach. That coach is gone and now K-State can resume its rightful place in the cellar.
ISU is superior to KSU in every aspect of realignment to every conference, period. 6 hour drive time means nothing in a plane.
But the content that is worth paying top dollar for (OU/TX) is elsewhere. There won't be a content hole because presumably the 8 remaining schools would continue to have athletics but there will be a "how much is this worth paying for?" issue. Fox/ESPN/etc. would be paying the vast majority of the money to the SEC that the Big 12 used to command. A pittance would be left behind for the leftovers likely similar to what the AAC or MW gets now.
It would unquestionably be the end of ISU athletics as a major player.
The exit fees they would have to pay to the conference would be $70-80M....and more since it appears that neither school provided the required 12 hours notice before starting negotiations with the SEC. (per Big12 charter) It would at least put a dent in the total or service the debt for a while...

Texas and OU are probably going to have to pay a lot of money to leave especially if they have not done things properly I don't think this will be a case of getting the exit fee cut in half or getting it down to 75% like Maryland did.....all the more so if there was no 12 hour notice
this could be anywhere from $60 million to $90+ million for Texas and OU to leave depending on the amounts paid by the conference the prior two years and how much anyone and everyone wants to fight in court.......which I think the other 8 members of the Big 12 will be up for a pretty big fight
the Big 12 can also refuse to televise games of the members leaving if they are in violation of the contract>>

Even if a decision wasn't based exclusively on TV viewers for sporting events I think the Big 10 has always had somewhat of an interest in empire building their brand.
I'm going from memory here, but I recall reading after the last round of realignment that ESPN felt it had overstepped a bit in driving all that activity and somewhat regretted its role in nearly nuking the Big 12 and that they felt there was value in the conference. That was comforting for awhile.
