Breece Hall now on Cameo

Like all the best players aren't already getting paid and going to the best schools. What the hell are people afraid of again? That what's already happening is going to keep happening? If anything this gives ISU an opportunity to legitimately offer what the big boys have been offering already. It's going to be fine people.

Exactly. I honestly think this uniquely positions places like Iowa and Iowa State. There are no other stars here, but there are businesses with money to spend. Breece Hall, Brock Purdy, Luka Garza, etc. are the biggest celebrities we have to offer, and they can cash in on that.

It’s a rare demographic we’re looking at here. It’s different for professional athletes/celebrities because they already have it made financially. They really have no need to do a bunch of Cameo’s.

College athletes have similar levels of fame, yet do not have that wealth. It’ll be a big moneymaker for them no doubt and they’ll take advantage. It’s literally getting paid to say a few words on a video.

Oh I don't disagree. All I'm saying is that because they aren't wealthy and will be chasing some $$$, there's a risk of them unknowingly putting themselves into potentially embarrassing situations. "Washing your fruit" was obviously an inside joke and presumably benign, but I can see a scenario where it happens.

Hopefully the NIL coordinators the university is hiring will help them navigate all of this.

We already don't have competitive balance. What this does do is shift some of the money flowing through college athletics to the players and I don't have any problem with it.
If you understand how things work today (the actual reality, not the way many think things works), this won't influence the top 50 players or the 350 or lower, it's in between where it's going to create more challenges.

The big influence isn't going to come from $50 Cameos. The guys that we want (typically 50-350 ranking) today will still consider ISU because of various reasons - it creates an equal playing field of sorts. The big challenge is going to be where boosters and donors get involved in the 50-150 now and can promise a wealthier fanbase or booster base without having to hide things. It makes it much easier to make financial incentives known without having to get more involved directly. A rabid fanbase will help us, but it's still a financial small base compared to most true competition.
I wanna believe that. And i hope that’s what happens. But that seems slightly oversimplified and there are so, so many factors and unknowns that have yet to sort themselves out. I will remain worried about money become an issue knowing ISU has factors working against it marketwise until we see this play out.

Here's why I like NIL at ISU:

We likely still won't be recruiting kids that are going to be top 350 guys except rare cases. This likely won't change the profile of recruits we go after and IMO likely won't change if we get them or not.

So how do you make money at ISU? Perform well on the field. Don't get in trouble. Engage with the community in an ongoing and positive way.

It's less about the recruiting cycle and more about helping motivate people once they hit campus.

I am sure some schools will use NIL as a recruiting pitch, noting that they have resources to help athletes maximize their NIL better than other schools. But at the end of the day, for the revenue sports, the most important thing for their career is playing time to allow them to make it to the next level. NIL is minor compared to the money at the next level for the revenue sports.

So how long before the first athlete gets in trouble with the IRS? I'm guessing this "income" is not automatically reported like a W-2?

I wonder how long it is before the athletic department has a new position on staff: “NIL Broker”. An intermediary who checks out and connects legitimate companies and interested athletes—while making sure all the t’s are crossed i’s are dotted.

I read somewhere Iowa is utilizing their Law and Business schools to help athletes, which would certainly be a benefit. Kind of a nice cross-over opportunity to get students some experience while helping athletes out.

#NotAnAccountant, but would be a 1099 from Cameo if they earn over $600. If they don’t already, programs will/should have someone in place to help with quarterly filings, tax planning, etc.

As an athletic department not sure I would want any involvement in helping with tax planning or even tracking NIL earnings for student athletes.

I would think that could cross the line and characterize them as employees vs. student-athlete/Independants contractors. Also not sure I would want any liability, if the AD's hired tax planner is incompetent.

This is an area where I think the NCAA common ground legislation should address. Student-athletes should be responsible for coordination of their NIL branding and schools should be prohibited from offering services.

Those who desire Competitive balance.

If you think there is competitive balance now you are crazy. There is a reason you can pretty much nail at least 3 of the 4 playoff teams before the season starts. Best case scenario this will help spread out the wealth. Worst case, it stays the same.

Basketball it could help the non-blue bloods teams even more. Just takes one guy to turn around a basketball team.

There’s definitely not competitive balance. Totally agree. And You could be completely right about things moving forward. I’m just thinking there’s a chance it could make it even worse.

What’s the worst that can happen? Alabama and Clemson play in another NC in football?

Basketball it could really help non-blue bloods. Imagine a 5* picking a Non P5 team because they offer a great opportunity. That’s a game changer for a school.
