It is not that bad honestly. A lot of fan bases do this stuff. I do not get that caught up in the fandom. It wastes to much energy. ISU deserves to have some success. Hard for Iowa fans to grasp that IMO. Not sure why either. Let it go. I feel like most hawkeye fans that dish **** out are the ones that do not follow Iowa enough or have no idea about sports in general. Really annoying. ISU will find fans that do that with more successful seasons in football. When Iowa was doing well in 2015, it was so dumb seeing these "fans" appear when they were successful. I am also a CHIEFS fan and that is annoying also when there are suddenly fans everywhere when they win a superbowl.
See I personally don’t “hate” Iowa fans because I have so many friends and family members that are truly good people and because of that, good fans. Are there bad Iowa fans? Absolutely. Are they similar to other fan bases? Absolutely. I’m not going to act like Iowa is the absolute worst fan base out there though because I know me being an Iowa State fan enhances everything.

My post above more had to do with the stereotype of Iowa fans, which is that they have a TON of fans that don’t actually go there or never actually went there. And it feels like 40% of those who went to UNI were actually just too afraid to leave the Cedar Valley area and make it in the “Big City” of Johnson County (I know like 20 people that literally did this), so they end up being big Iowa fans.

So, as an Iowa State fan bleeding Cardinal and Gold my whole life and seeing first hand students flip flopping tee shirts from one weekend to the next, it got kind of annoying listening to my friends and some family members at our tailgates back to back weekends talking about how “their team” is gonna beat mine lol.

Those of you that went to the Alamo Bowl: remember when that dude in full hok gear got on the Jumbotron? That was a pretty nasty cascade of boos.

Which brings up a disturbing trend. Pretty sure I've seen at least one douche nozzle in a hawk shirt at every Iowa State game I've been to in person.

What the **** is up with that? A game against Baylor and there's a hok douche.
I understand if you're there with your girlfriend and you're not a cyclone fan. Just wear something neutral. But it just has to be a middle finger every time.
The epitome of self important jack wagon. Get over yourself.

I really do think Hawk fans were emboldened by ISUs horrific run in the 80s and early 90s. 15 straight years will make any fanbase cocky. But some Iowa fans took the superiority complex to new levels. Their self esteem is somehow tied to Iowa needing to be better than ISU. Any ISU success and it threatens their long held belief that Iowa should always be better than Iowa State.

I personally know a guy that I umpire with. During the 15 year stretch he was unbearable. But he got worse when ISU won 5 in a row. He felt personally violated that Iowa could lose to such a horrible program in ISU. No credit where credit was due. No respect for anyone. He wanted coaches fired any time Iowa lost to ISU from the end of the streak on, literally. And outside of talking about football he's a good guy. My dad was his mentor so he's always been like a big brother to me. But holy **** he's a prick during Hate Week.

Honestly, I think that they're just there to party and maybe some of it is a little jealousy of our tailgating. If you're in central Iowa, the thought of driving two hours and fighting all of that congestion around the stadium doesn't sound like all that much fun. I would never go to IC for a non-ISU game, but if I did, I would definitely wear neutral clothes and probably be rooting for the visiting team secretly, but not openly.

I don't see the benefit of acting like a loud mouth a-hole in an opposing venue no matter who is playing.

When the Clones were playing Purdue in Milwaukee in 2017 in the dance they panned the fans in the stands on the big screen. Minnesota was also playing there. There was scattered applause when they showed fans from ISU, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Minnesota. Then they showed a guy in a hawk shirt and the whole place booed.

I can't blame you but this is why a lot of them do it. Instead of encouraging people to not sell their tickets to Cyclones they resort to asshat behavior to discourage Cyclones from going to games in Kinnick. I don't like seeing hawkeyes in Trice and Hilton but I would never resort to crass and/or violent behavior toward them.

Sadly I've had to put a few of our own fans in their place at Jack Trice too over the years for doing similar things but for the most part it's not nearly as many or on the same level that happens in IC IMO. Years ago a friend of ours who is a Hawk fan coincidently bought some seats just a row in front of us so was fun to have him sitting by us for the game when we found out when we got to our seats. He was not obnoxious and is a nice guy in general, ISU even won the game that year and he was shaking hands with people afterwards congratulating us on our win when some asshat a few rows up starts throwing things down at him and yelling. Several of us turned around and told the guy to knock it off as he'd been a good fan all game and we don't do that crap to other fans even if we have the same crap happen to us in Iowa City. Several people around us that were witnessing this all were shouting similar things back to him too so was great to see people we don't even know or barely knew just from seating proximity stand up for our friend too.

Years ago we would go to IC and tailgate with our hawk friends and then they would come to Ames the next year and tailgate with us. I didn't always have a ticket so sometimes I would just tailgate. One year in Ames my hawk buddy's wife decided to stay out and tailgate so my buddy gave me her ticket. As we were approaching our nosebleed seats we saw a female Cyclone fan who has clearly been overserved standing just behind our seats. Just as we approached our seats she proceeded to technicolor yawn on some of the seats in front of her. I started a mantra in my head, "Please don't be my seat, please don't be my seat,..." It turned out she hurled right on my hawk buddy's seat. I felt bad for him, but not bad enough to offer to exchange seats with him. The guy the hurler was with gave my buddy his jacket to sit on before he left with his blushing bride.

Few years back in the WDM Kohls, I saw 2 older guys in full flintstone gear, in a shouting match about one butting in line or something. This convinced me to get a smartphone. Video would have been priceless

I remember that guy. He would have been kicked to the moon if he was in our section. At least we had the Busch light lumberjack dude in our section to make our middle aged wives giddy.

It is so bizarre that this seems to happen everywhere. Didn't something similar happen at one of the MBB early season tournaments? I want to say Maui, but not sure.
Saw a couple of guys at the Kansas game in Lawrence a few years ago wearing parakeet shirts. I just looked at them and made sure they saw me shaking my head in disdain.

In 05 there was a drunk hok leaning on a lamppost trying to pick a fight with everyone walking back to campus. I just refered him to the scoreboard and kept walking. He hit me in the back with a half full can of beer.

I can also attest to NE Iowa being full of obnoxious t-shirt fans. And have also dealt with plenty of random idiots that feel the need to express their idiocy by yelling at a stranger. Mostly it's easy enough to ignore.

I do appreciate this thread and the stories. What with not playing them last year, and the season we had, I didn't pay any attention to them. The hatred had started to slip to just annoyance. Also, it's good to feel unified again as a fan base.

Good story. However, have u ever seen an Iowa grad tell the white trash Iowa fan to shut up? They are complicit.

I must be in the minority - I’ve partied and tailgated in Melrose Place for 5-6 CyHawk games in Iowa City from about 08-18in full ISU gear and never had any trouble. A lot of (not-so) friendly banter, but nothing over the top or physical.

The house we usually tailgated at was probably 70/30 Iowa fans vs Iowa state fans and it was a blast, can’t imagine not getting along with the 70% of the people there just because of the shirt they were wearing that day!

In the ‘05 ToE game, I was in the student section pretty early. During pregame, some dumbshit in a Tate jersey walked down the aisle in lower bowl of the student section. Everyone was watching him like wtf is this guy thinking? But no one says anything. Dude gets to the bottom and there was a small kerfuffle that broke out. Said dumbshit moments later was seen walking back up the aisle with pretty much just the collar left of the jersey on. I don’t know what that guy said to piss off the group of dudes that did that or what happened exactly but I have a really hard time feeling bad for him to this day.

The worst thing for me is that they seem to show up effing everywhere and they have to say something to you if you are wearing ISU gear. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "Go Hawks!" at any airport. I've had **** smeared on my trucks gas cap in Cedar Falls.

Also... in 2012 during TCU's first Big12 game, 2 hawk fans showed up to our tailgate. The random TCU fans there we were talking with straight up asked them "why the eff are you here?" It was priceless. They also said they were going to the game and cheering for TCU to win.

I would never say "Go Clones" to any hawk anywhere. But for some reason they just can't help themselves. I swear its a complex of some kind.

Not very often, but this incident still chaps my hide:

At the DM Downtown Farmer's Market, there's a children's barrel train ride. It's a 1972 Case IH yard tractor mocked up to look like a steam engine. It pulls nine "cars" made out of old oil barrels. We purchased the business from the original owner 8...9? years ago. (FU, covid - I can't wait to get it running again.) Let me tell you, hearing the joyful laughs from children and engaging in friendly, fun banter with the parents makes the sun a little brighter.

One Saturday a few years ago, on a beautiful September morning, we're running the train. My wife and I trade off driving duties with selling tickets. I happened to be selling tickets at the time. The 5-minute ride is in progress, so I'm watching for safety issues. It was starting to get chilly; I had on one of my solid red/cardinal ISU sweatshirts. This pair of couple walk by on the sidewalk. We make eye contact and give the non-verbal "Hey" nod. As they're two or three steps past me, one of the d-bags yells out "GoHawks."

W.T. F? There wasn't a game that day. We were at Farmer's Market. It still chaps my hide. WIsh I could turn back time to reply with a hearty "Piss Off!"

This isn’t nearly as bad as most of the stuff here, but I’ve never seen a fan base let another team live so rent free as Iowa State does to them. I went to the ISU-Texas game in 2018, biggest game in school history, and saw a number of people dressed up in Iowa gear yelling at Cyclone fans, etc. After the game, one of these said idiots comes up to me, a senior in HS at the time and says “maybe next time buddy”

Does a trash talking 7 year old Squawkeye count? He was in a McDonald's and literally came up to me saying the Cyclones suck. (I was wearing a ISU coat)
He was wearing Hawkeye gloves and I said "Hey, those are neat...can I see them?" He gives them to me and I chucked them across the floor. My son jumps up and says "Dad! That wasn't very nice!" And went and picked them up for the boy. I just sat there and ate my sandwich like nothing happened. Probably wasn't very nice of me I know.

Is this satire? I want to think it is, but sadly I’m guessing this is a real anecdote.
