80s Music

If you want to totally geek-out, here are some totally random lines from '80s songs, none of which include the song title.

I took a few punctuation liberties, to mimic auditory phrasing, as if anyone needs help.

“You play the gui-tar on the MTV.” - Dire Straits
“I was dreaming when I wrote, excuse me if it goes astray.” - Prince
“But, the kid is not my son.” - Michael Jackson
“Where do we go? Where do we go now? Where do we go-oh?” - Guns n Roses
“It's a, nice day to … start again” - Billy Idol
“She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went” - Robert Palmer
“Oh, can’t you see … you belong to me”- The Police
“You make a grown man cry”
“I’m on the hunt, I’m after you” - Duran Duran
“Fab Five Freddy told me everybody’s fly”
“I can lock all my doors, it’s the only way to live”
“Can't you see me standin' here I got my back against the record machine” - Van Halen
“Foreign types with the hookah pipes say ‘Whey oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh’” - The Bangles

Without looking it up...

Age bias 60s best. 70s and 80s about equal but give the nod to 80s.

Favorite acts were probably Elvis Costello through about '86. Crowded House is top notch pop-rock and a delve into their catalog is definitely worth the trip. I find I like some of their lesser known stuff as much as or better than some of the more popular items.

Also a fan of the Squeeze, Marshall Crenshaw, Nick Lowe and the BoDeans.

I'm a little more partial to 90s music since that was my generation but 80s is a close 2nd.

For those that jsut watched the NCAA tourney that catchy "Lets Make lots of money" is Pet Shop Boys-Opportunities.

I had no idea that was an old 80s song.

The BoDeans were such a fun act to see live! And their music is just awesome! Shame that Kurt has to be such a d-bag...Sammy still puts out some very good music...but seems to have some issues he is still dealing with!

Born in 89 and while "I can lock all my doors it's the only way to live" took a bit I finally thought of it.

It's really effing annoying to be able to place the words but not to the melody to get the songs.

College student 82-86.
Rarely listen to 60s music.
Hated 70s music until punk and new wave.
Thankful for KKRL in Carrol and their brief foray into punk/new wave while I was in high school. Introduced me to the Fabulous Poodles, XTC, and many others.
From the 80s still regularly listen to graham parker, john hiatt, beautiful south, smiths, clash, squeeze, crowded house.

It’s sad that you don’t hear music from the 60s and early 70s anymore. Someday that will be the case with 80s music. Will be sad. I was born in the early 90s so I never got to live through the golden generation of music.

Want my spotify playlist?

My memory must be failing, I just went back through the 70's top 100 and there was a crap ton load of baaad songs. 80's were better.

the 80s had a lot of difference scenes. Each with their own look own culture. There were 80s bands doing 60s guitar pop, punk rock, post punk and new wave, heavy metal or hair bands, synth pop, etc... There was so much going on outside top 40 radio. MTVs 120 minutes on Sunday nights is what we watched to find out the new post punk or alternative bands. College radio otherwise know as left of the dial was a big deal too.

XTC, have you seen the Documentary "This is Pop". It's excellent.

The other cool think about the 80s was OZ rock. So many great bands hit from Australia hit the international stage. The Go-Bewtweens, INXS, Crowded House, The Triffids, Midnight Oil, The Underground Lovers, Men at Work, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Divinyls and my favavorte The Church.
