Coaching Search: Place your bets

The problem with Hoiberg was his initial build was with transfers (both grad and traditional sit-out). At the time we had first choice of the best players, then others schools including the Blue Bloods decided that it would work for them also.
Now we're stuck with the likes of Merrill Holden, Jeff Beverly, and Prentiss Nixon. We all know how those worked out for us.

I will give him kudos for bringing in Georges, Naz, Matt Thomas, and Monte after we were established.
Stop this nonsense.

Less than 18 months before we got Holden we got Burton. Perhaps it was a difference in staffs ability to recruit? He got Georges to commit BEFORE he had a winning season. Morris and Thomas committed after just two years on the job.

Hoiberg had a mix of transfers, 4-year guys, and jucos. So pretty much the same mix we’ve always used to have success. The one class of 4 transfers is unique, and added to Scotty created a fun story, but don’t let that distract you from him having three all-time greats that were 4 year guys, plus two very good 4 year guys.

He had 2 grad transfers. Kane was big, immediately eligible get, but no more sought after than immediately eligible Bolton. With the new rule, a grad transfers are no longer a scarce resource.

it boggles my mind the people on here that think Hoiberg would be a bad hire or somehow ISU deserves something better. 2 bad years at Nebraska doesn't mean he can't coach or build a program. I would be elated if he came back especially if he thinks he will stay at the collegiant level.

Did I not hear at some point that he said that one good thing about the pros is that he didn't have to recruit? I guess he could hire a great assistant to do the grunt work for him, then come in later in the process.

Why not? We judge prohm and we aren’t qualified. We can also judge TJ.
Because no one knows what’s going on besides watching the ball. UNLV has won 13 games. So by my metric TJ is 6.5 times the coach Steve is. That’s fair right?
I was always told in prior customer service related job, that customer is always right (even though sometimes not). We fans are the customer. Fans perception is their perceived reality. Many if not most fans perceive TJ as a weaker coaching candidate. If JP hires TJ he likely will not have the initial support, interest and good will of the fans. Therefore a quick or even moderate turn-around becomes more difficult.

A charasmatic new coach, one with a style and identity that will get our fans excited, is what is needed. IMO we need a fresh start and a new face.

For the TJ people...

Go to around 11:30 in this podcast and listen until around 13:30 or so. See what this guy thinks of TJ. Hint, it's not good. One of the worst coaches in the Mountain West. He can't believe ISU would want him and UNLV should pack him into a FedEx plane and send him to Ames.

Enough said. UNLV should be more competitive and closer to the top of their conference by now, even if only TJ's second year there. If many now at UNLV don't want him, why should we? It's a red-flag.

ISU fans should tune in to the UNLV (TJ) vs Utah St (Craig Smith) game tonight:

8:00 CT on CBS Sports Network
I will pay attention. UNLV appears to be a 10 point underdog. Will they get this close or better when it matters most? I think not. They've shown their colors up to now.

That is a huge IF there. Imagine thinking Fred is as hungry this time around, especially with having easily accumulated generational wealth by now.

.ISU already has a coach that doesn't emphasize defense or rebounding, and runs a disorganized offense that requires a stellar point guard to make it work. Why do you want that again? It ain't workin'
for Hoiberg at NU either. NU is a significantly worse team than they were two years ago.
Yeah, they are worse. Miles' teams were never this bad. I'd like an ISU program that wants to disrupt teams defensively, rebounds the ball, and runs a structured offense that takes good shots. That sure doesn't describe Fred's Nebraska program.
