*** Official Iowa State Season Thread ***

That game was the epitome of the season as well as Steve Prohm's career at Iowa State. A couple of things from last night:

1. Not having a PG was glaring at the end and has been at the end of every close game. Our half court offense is abysmal and 50% of that has to do with us not having a true PG. We don't have a single guy I'd trust to make the right play and that's bad.

2. Situational coaching has been and obviously still is awful. What's the percentage of successful plays ran out of a TO? I'd love to know that and compare it to other programs. That high ball screen play was 3rd grade level stuff. To go along with situational coaching, Solomon Young should not have been in the game down the stretch. GC was actually doing a pretty good job at defending the rim and towards the end of the game, all Baylor was doing was attacking the rim. Young is not a rim protector.

3. In close games, the thing that usually wins/loses you games is the FT line and yet again, we barely shoot any. We shot 5 FT's last night. We shot 6 against OU. And it's not just about shooting FT's. It's that we're not getting guys into foul trouble OR allowing us the opportunity to shoot 1-1's down the stretch instead of running our disgusting half court sets.

4. Incredibly well fought game by our team. Our guys deserved that win but aren't in the right situation to win those types of games. It's a combination of a lot of things and a lot of those things have to do with roster construction and in-game coaching. All of those things that hopefully will get fixed with an entirely new staff. I fully believe there are pieces on this team that can work in a different situation.

We don't shoot free throws because we don't attack the basket or run an actual offense.

I agree but again we're now 0-14. I'll settle for a fun game to watch where we are competitive at this point. It was fun and I found myself getting really into it. It's been a while.

Oh I agree. It was a nice change to find yourself somewhat invested in the outcome. And I sure wanted them to win because the guys absolutely deserve it.

But I also think it's important to keep in prospective just how much the stars have to align for us to even have a chance at winning a game like this.

Yup. That'd go under recruiting / Prohm's ability to hold guys accountable for shot selection. I couldn't tell you how many times this year our guys have pulled up for a 10-15 foot jump shot instead of taking it all the way to the rim.

I think most disheartening is that we are this bad and our freshmen can't even get a sniff of playing time. Walker has fallen out of favor and Dubar and Blackwell can't find the floor. We stink and we play 2 seniors, 4 juniors and a sophomore.

That is actually the most telling thing of all. It's a monumental indictment on Prohm's coaching ability. He's just so unbelievably terrible.

Anyone have any inside info on Dubar? He started early in the season now he is nowhere to be found.

I saw him in the fringe area of the huddle last night and he looked completely checked out also when the team had a chance at the end.

I wouldn't be shocked if he's gone after this year.

Yeah very weird situation. He is a good rebounder and does a lot of little things. Seems like something must be going on that he went from starter to nothing.

Perhaps he's attained the illustrious distinction of "random Steve Prohm doghouse guy". A proud lineage, including past greats Jameel McKay, Cam Lard and Terrence Lewis.

And Blackwell. If you can’t get PT on this team, I wouldn’t think it bodes well for your future.

I think the epitome of Prohms coaching comes with less than a minute left in the game and it’s a two point game and Prohm calls a timeout and the play is for Rasir to run the clock down to 7-8 seconds and have Solomon come up for a high ball screen only to be shutdown and end up turning the ball over. You had to call a timeout and that’s what you draw up? The same thing you run EVERY half court possession? Just a clueless coach. It was the best ISU has played all year and his coaching in the last minute cost them any chance for an upset.

To be fair, the "run a ball screen for our best player" approach works great on my daughter's 5th grade team.

He brought some neat ideas early in the season regarding movement on the offensive end. He looks like another example of someone who knew better how to play before he was "coached" by Prohm.

Losses to ranked teams:

BU 76-65 (down 5 with 2 minutes left)
BU 77-72 (led entire game until 4:11 left)
WVU 70-65
WVU 76-72
UT 78-72
OU 79-72

Not good enough, obviously, but playing that many close games against good teams leads me to believe there's something there to build upon.

Could part of it be apathy from the opponent?
No team is going to get "up" for every game. Stands to reason the ones they don't are against a team with 2 wins on the year.

ISU is capable of close games if the opponent is not focused, and ISU is hitting the 3 ball.
But good teams find a way to win most the time and poor teams find ways to lose most of the time

This is why you end up with 2-5 win seasons.

For some reason, we're a mild Kryptonite for WVU this year.
Other games, you can see the opponent modify their effort for stretches of the game.
Others, we just have an aspect where we play well and then we hit Prohm time and fall apart.

So basically, what you said. When everything goes our way, we have a chance to compete until Prohm gets to the last few minutes.

And Blackwell. If you can’t get PT on this team, I wouldn’t think it bodes well for your future.

Blackwell looks completely lost in the few minutes I've seen him play. He was the 2nd highest rated recruit alos behind Foster.

It's hard to tell if these guys just aren't good and huge recruiting misses or if they being lead by a completely inept coaching staff that cant develop them.

One other thing that wound up being completely inconsequential, but it's nice to see Prohm learned absolutely nothing from the debacle of having Bolton on the bench at the end of the OU game (I think it was OU, which ever game we were down 3 and got a steal at the end and Tre jacked up a 35 footer...).

I saw he put Jenkins in again to avoid one of our other guards fouling out with 10 or so seconds left. Harris, who was our best shooter all night, was sitting on the bench of avoid the tragic outcome of fouling out with 10 seconds left.

He's probably one of the least creative coaches in CBB and I honestly think he confuses guys. Watch other teams and how their players know what to do and where to be at almost all the time. Then watch our guys and we couldn't have the slightest clue. Even after a timeout we look lost.

There are probably 8 possessions a game where we're in the half court, we look over to Prohm, he yells out a play and has to scream at guys to get them to where they need to be, and it usually ends in some sort of high ball screen and a poor shot attempt. HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING.

The more involved he is in "coaching", the worse the team performs. That's one reason why (in addition to having all the Fred studs) the first couple years were not as bad. Monte, Georges, Naz were doing the coaching.

I expect these last few games they will play better because at least some of the players will just start ignoring him wholesale. I think it has already started, honestly.

i 100% believe in playing down to your opponent and i think that is whats happening when these games are somewhat close.

the games are just sloppy overall
