ISU vs UNI postgame thread

I couldn't watch the game... so wanted to know thoughts on Lucca. Is he out of "game shape" or is he just struggling right now getting into his grove? Or do we think all the attention paid to him last year is either adding too much pressure or was he over hyped? I really want him to be a big time player.

Looked like he was out of sync some, didn't get a couple of shots to fall, but the other guys were playing well also.

Good:

-excellent play by Brackins...and almost all of it was banging down low. MUCH MUCH better rebounding by him too.
-DG in OT was amazing.
-Loved JVB's hustle and D...he makes mistakes but he will learn.
-Good gameplan with the zone and man-to-man mix up
-Didn't have to rely on the 3-ball

Bad:
-Free throws. Enough said.
-WAY too many defensive breakdowns.

UNI didn't shoot well but they only had 2 TOs all game. And we still won.

Completely agree, that really disrupted UNI's offense, without it I our chances would've greatly decreased.

Very good win tonight. Especially when the team was not hitting the 3 ball. I loved how well ISU executed the zone. Very impressed with the defensive output tonight.

We couldn't stop dribble penetration without fouling! The zone worked a lot because they stopped dribble penetrating (I don't think we stopped them as they looked more for the 3) and they couldn't get many open looks, and thankfully didn't shoot well with a good defensive hand in their face.

Really happy about the win. We needed this.

Having said that, am I the only one that thinks UNI really sucked? They didn't turn over the ball much, but they took stupid shots and couldn't stop CB even when we gave him the ball practically every time we came down the floor.

Great win! I didn't see it coming! Hope this is a sign of things to come. Will be there on Saturday - take out OSU!

If someone would've told me before the game that we were only going to hit two 3's all game, and that UNI would only turn the ball over twice all game...first I would've laughed in their face, then I would've assumed that we were gonna get killed...good win fellas, way to man up!!

That's the perfect perspective!!!

He'll come around, just a little out of sync right now. He has a nice tough drive to the hoop in the second half...hope to see more of that.

This team still has a ways to go, but considering that everyone moaned about how we were going to be flat, and how we were going to suck, I'll take a win.

Not impressed with the McLeod Center, either.

CB had a hell of a game, but he still has a lot to improve in.
At is some needed muscle on D once we get into the Big 12 season.
DG gets better and better every game, when he is on the court he should be playing PG.
It look like the game plan was get DG and CB the ball and scrap the 3 for the night.
Petey is a good player but plays best when he is not at the point.
Wes is going to be a great player even though he is from small town Nebraska.
This was a great experence for a young learning team. They can build on this win.

The TV picture wasnt good at all. More lighting anyone.

Some random thoughts...

1) The change up on defenses was really good...they'd adjust, and we'd switch back. Kept them guessing.

2) We REALLY struggled keeping them out of the lane off the ball screen in the first half...especially the last 8 seconds of the clock. We started soft hedging and double teaming the drive softly until they gave it up because they weren't burning us at all with the roll guy. We even hard trapped a few of the ball screens in a second half as a change up.

3) Brackins...wow. Better than the stats was the way he did it.

4) Where is the hell did DG's explosive one handed drive late come from?!?!

5) Mac adjusted the zone in mid-second half because UNI was going to a 4 out look so we started spreading the zone out more to match up to their personnel. They didn't even want to throw it inside...probably because Egleseder was on the bench because he couldn't guard Brackins.

Interesting to see how the minutes played out. Not much AT tonight.

Well, AT got 2 really quick fouls in the first half & sat for most of the rest of the time. That had something to do with his minutes, although he was also absent at the end of the game. I just think McDermott thought the notorious JVB was more effective tonight so he went with the hot hand to close out the game. It's nice having depth, isn't it?

It's nice to see some people finally realizing that Petey can play basketball a little bit.

For anyone listening to the postgame show...Brackins must be angling for a Kleenex sponsorship!!

Good interview, but he sniffed loudly through the whole thing.

They have a few good players, they just have no depth. Our D looked like it took them out of their game plan. We also slowed their 3 best players in the 2nd half and they struggled beacuse of it.

I still think he is a little slow on the defensive end and wouldn't be able to close on his opponent on the arc. I think he still needs a couple weeks to get his feet under him and just settle down and relax.

On another note, I loved in OT, we put in our leaders (DG, Petey, Brackins, Haluska, and Eikmeier)

Just guessing, but his knee could be bugging him some as well. He is athletic and needs to calm down sometimes. Sometimes it seems like his mind is quicker than his body and it shows. Don't worry, he seems like he will be a contributor. Maybe not so much stat-wise this year, but hopefully for the next two years if he can stay away from the injury bug.

Very proud of the team for sticking with it through OT and I'm especially proud of Craig for having a monster game (32 pts. & 16 boards). There were a lot of people down on Craig after the Hawaii loss and I'm just happy to see him shake that off and move on.

Just a good overall win for our young team. They're going to play in a lot of tight games this year, so knowing they can close one out in OT is a big step forward and boosts the confidence.

Congrats Cyclones!

You can tell Lucca's legs aren't quite under him yet. At least i hope that's the case.

I know it isn't fair, but CB reminded me of a young Marcus Fizer tonight. Very active on both ends, lots of boards, and knew he could score whenever he wanted. Between him and DG it brought back some nice memories of the beginning of this decade. I know they are not on that level yet, but we did get to see some glimpses. When this team gets comfortable running the offense and finding their shots, watch out!

Petey looks way more comfortable this year. He is making solid contributions, choosing good shots, and doing the little things. Very happy for the kid.
