Annual Matt Campbell in demand - 2020 version

I really don't remember how many teams were interested in Ferentz in the early 2000s when he was winning...but after a certain point, teams just stopped asking about Ferentz availability...even though he was winning 7-8 games "most" years... My point (or question) here is...will ISU and Campbell ever get to a point where teams just stop inquiring because he's been here for so long? Just curious.

I think another example of this is Pat Fitzgerald. He's turned that into a respectable program and should probably be on alot of short lists for open jobs. But I think it's pretty well out there he doesn't want to leave and you don't really even hear his name come up for other jobs anymore.

Let's not forget, there is quite a bit of reputational risk Campbell would assume by going to Michigan. If he fails like the last 3 guys, its going to set him back. Look at Rich Rod - he had a great gig at WV, left for Michigan, and it tanked his career.

He left a very good West Virginia job. Got fired at Michigan. Picked up the pieces and landed a below average Arizona job, got fired, was out of football for 2 years, was at Ole Miss for 1 year as OC and is back out of football.

Not saying that would ever happen to Campbell but if you look at the pros and cons of Michigan vs. ISU, it is not as easy of a decision as one would think. Stay at ISU for the next 10 years, earn $40 to $50 million (after more raises and extensions, which will surely come), and control all aspects of the program - basically become Kirk Ferentz. Or jump to Michigan where you are going to be second fiddle in your own division behind Ohio State, where expectations are sky high, and possibly get fired and tank your career. All to be coaching at a "blue blood" where you probably have a slightly higher ceiling to make the CFB than you do at Iowa State.

You can’t really use RichRod as an example, give the, uh, extra-curriculars involved, particularly at Arizona.

Let's not forget that Jim Harbaugh (if he leaves) got 4 years at Michigan before the fan base tired of him (and probably more like 2.5-3 years). And he was a Michigan Man, Super Bowl coach, and hot commodity. Campbell's system can take years to fully implement - does he want to go through that? Or build on what he has already built here. Arguably, he has an easier road to a conference title and the CFB Playoff at Iowa State than he does at Michigan as they are so far behind Ohio State in their own division.

It is possible he leaves, of course. But why leave then you are just getting into the meat of what you've built over the last 4 years?

The other part of that is that Michiganders are not willing to wait 4 years.

Not to mention he would never be welcomed back to his hometown That he seems to have an affinity for. There’s no town more “Ohio Football Hometown” outside of Columbus than Masillon. Seriously everyone would hate him and his family and they wouldn’t be shy about it.

He’s always taken less to offer his staff more, he took less due to covid. I think he’s a good guy who likes what he has here.

Back to Covid, I wonder how much more Pollard will be able to offer him this off season because of it.
Since the “raise” would largely come in terms of an extension—and/or start with ‘21 revenue and pay—would COVID come into the equation?

Campbell loved coaching at Toledo but ultimately left for a bigger job. I don't see any reason he wouldn't leave ISU for a bigger job if it is the right fit. Hard to say what that "right fit" will be, but I'm sure it's out there.

Talking G5 to P5. Also ran in Ohio to now the big show in Iowa. Not as comparable as ISU to most other P5s

You're probably right, but I don't think that's quite apples to apples. Our history aside, we do play in one of the premier conferences in America. If you build a program, there's nothing keeping you from all the same goals you would have at Michigan, Notre Dame, etc. I mean, hell, we are one boneheaded loss to Louisiana away from being pretty firmly in the CFB Playoff conversation. And while I'm not sure we can ever pay quite as much as some of those big schools, JP has an ability to find money when he needs it.

You were never doing anything of those things at Toledo, but if you build it well enough all goals as a college football coach can be in reach here.

Campbell is very coy about his private life. I doubt anyone outside the walls of the ISU facility know his specific religious affiliations or things like that. If he even has one. I'm not sure he even has a well known hobby, like Johnny Orr and golf or Paul Rhoads and motor cycling. I'm pretty sure he just spends the offseason in a bunker watching film.
