Hakeem Butler Cut

Butler was awesome making great catches and man handling d backs. He had problems with normal catches. Also you don’t manhandle NFL defensive backs. That said I think he can catch on with a team.

The Bears need a quarterback. Anyone would be better than Tribiski, anyone that is breathing is better than Tribiski.;)

I agree that there is some of that problem with Butler but people said the same thing about Lazard. Besides Butler hasn’t really gotten any opportunity to show anything since he got hurt last year. It is absolutely fair to say that our guys seem to have a tougher time of breaking through.

WHY would a coach or GM stick with a player if he can't do the job? What would a coach or GM have to gain by keeping a WR from a big name school who can catch the ball vs. dropping a 4th round pick who was hurt all last year and who has a habit of NOT catching the ball?

Tell me the conspiracy...

Yeah, one circus catch doesn't make up for many drops in the NFL. NFL offenses are so precise with their timing and spacing, too, that you have to be an elite route runner to make an impact. Hakeem would have been an absolute beast 20 years ago, but the game has evolved so much from those days.

There are better situations for Butler with better head coaches, but he is at a disadvantage this year having no preseason games. Lots of talented guys may slip through the cracks.

Could be wrong, but I don't think Minnesota is going to be signing him, not to the active roster anyway. They've got a crowded WR room. Probably aren't going to be keeping more than 5 or possibly 6 on the 53 man roster. Top two are safe. Two more rookies that they like. And then 3 (Beebe, Sharpe and Hollins) for the last spot(s). Butler, at this point, is a flyer for any team. I'm betting he ends up on a practice squad.
Speaking as a Vikings fan for a very long time, “lots of mediocre” does not constitute a “crowded WR room”.

There’s a reason they probably aren’t keeping very many. If Hakeem could consistently catch the ball, he could separate himself.

And yes, I’m figuring the Vikes still need to pick up another high round WR in the next couple of years.

People said Lazard couldn’t catch? I find that hard to believe. The knock on him was his speed. He’s not the fastest guy in the world. Far from in, actually, but Lazard catches the ball and is a good route runner.

Lazard - as per Rodgers - brought SO much to the room. His practice habits, his film study, his leadership... He seems to embody CMC's cliche of "make me play you".

I feel sorry for him, but this is not unexpected.

I really hope he finds another team and does well, though.

The injury really impacted his ability to showcase his talent and grow with the team in his rookie year. Hope he gets some work in and gets picked up somewhere.

Arizona was a bad landing spot for him from the get go. Didn’t fit the offense at all. Hope the Pack pick him up. Want to see Lazard and Butler catching TDs together again.

He’s been struggling catching the ball, correct?

I think that was always considered a weakness of his. In the pros you have to be more than just a jump ball guy. Hope someone else gives him a shot.

He had a crazy high drop rate in college. That’s why he was a 4th rounder.

The injury set him back and probably didn’t help in fix that problem. Teams aren’t patient with guys that don’t consistently catch the ball. Guys like Hakeem will get chances, but he’s got to figure it out. I remember Andre Johnson with the Texans struggled with drops and fixed to become a great WR. Unfortunately I also remember Troy Williamson.

Geez this thread is rough to read. Situations change fast, doesn't mean he doesn't have the talent. It's just hard for an unproven guy coming off an injury. He'll find a landing spot.

Unproven and coming off an injury are killers in the NFL. Unless you’re a truly high level talent, there’s always a next man up. I’m expecting practice squad and the same rough road to a roster as AL had.
