MLB: Holliday to the A's

Dang. I wanted to see him in a Mets uniform. But how in the heck could Oakland sign him after this year? Maybe Beane will be shopping him for prospects or something.

Wow, the A's actually acquire talent instead of letting to go for once.

huh.. this seems like a trade where the A's would be on the opposite end.

The A's will likely ship him out to a contender mid year or rake in the draft picks when he files for free agency... Beane knows what he is doing... He has no intentions to re-sign him...

He would have but the Cardinals wouldn't part with Ludwick...

Another dumb move by the Cardinals (assuming this IS the reason). They aren't willing to part with a player who has had one good season to get a guy who is a proven all-star.

I think it came down to years. They have Ludwick for 3 years and would only get Holliday for 1 before free agency. I guess they have more pressing needs (rotation, bullpen) than adding to an already full outfield.

STLtoday - St. Louis Cardinals GM says Holliday trade not happening

This article says the Rockies also wanted Skip Schumaker and Mitchell Boggs, a AAA pitcher, and the Cards were unwilling to trade three players (two considerably productive) for Holliday and all his $$$. Earlier in the week they were saying that Holliday would command a higher salary than Pujols.

Too bad for Cards fans. Having Pujols and Holliday in the same lineup is a rather sexy proposition, but alas, no more.

Beane may be re-signing Holliday after all. Ken Rosenthal says:

Rosenthal says the A's do not plan to flip Holliday or trade him in July. Rosenthal also says the A's could increase payroll to as high as $80MM, which could mean $25-30MM to play with.
