Coronavirus Coronavirus: In-Iowa General Discussion (Not Limited)

March 1 there were 75 confirmed cases. March 16 4663. That is not a good curve. I can't help but think that because of the limited testing those numbers aren't really quite a bit more. Hopefully just 2x?? We will really start to find out next week.
I have seen several doctors comment that looking back to the previous month they saw a lot of patients exhibiting flu like symptoms but were testing negative for Influenza and that they think there were most likely covid 19 positive.

I think the potential long lasting effects of getting the virus haven't been explained well enough to people. There is a lot of talk about the elderly and mortality but not enough talk about younger people and permanent scarring to the lungs. I have seen reports that some of the younger adults are actually the ones getting hit really hard in terms of the effects of the virus. I don't know why, but I have wondered if one reason is they aren't as quick to see a doctor.

Hong Kong saw 20 to 30% reduced lung function

Is that permanent? I'm guessing that's not for everyone that was infected, only the ones that required hospital care? How does that compare to the average pneumonia case? Isn't it essentially pneumonia that people are getting, or is it worse on the lungs than normal?

I realize you probably don't have the answers to those, just thinking out loud.

well US is at 5.9k cases today;

China was at 5.9k cases on January 28th and 7 days later was at 24k cases

Italy was at 5.9k cases on March 7th and 7 days later was at 21k cases

This is going to quadruple in 7 days.

Here's an article dealing with lung capacity in Korean patients:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sc...ona-can-be-left-gasping-for-breath-afterwards

Doesn't it give you viral pneumonia in advanced cases? That is going to **** your lungs up. I had a coworker who got pneumonia and he wasn't breathing right for months afterwards. Would get fatigued walking the stairs and stuff like that.

"Tsang added, however, that patients can do cardiovascular exercises, like swimming, the improve their lung capacity over time."

That's a positive at least. I'd like to know that if you have healthy lungs to begin with, if that helps this after effect.

Nice to see so many restaurants able to offer take-out to try to blunt some of this.

Have to wonder though, how long before shortages of take out boxes affect those restaurants?

I had this same thought today.

Boxes, shipped food, workers...

To be fair, China was the first place this stuff hit and they needed to figure out what the hell was going on hence the slow response. Italy was also very slow in response as it was still relatively unknown. Don't get me wrong, I don't think this is going to be good for us, but HOPEFULLY, by integrating some of these policies earlier in the timeline then either China or Italy, we can slow the progression to a more reasonable rate.

Thought I would leave the house for the 1st time in 3 days and have never had the Popeyes chicken sandwich. So I order online for window pickup. Get to the kiosk outside and they say”just pull around and come inside”. Wtf

At 6 o’clock it was really quiet. Seemed like a Sunday at 7am. I really have a hard time imagine this going on for more than a couple of weeks.

Hasn't it been said that we're even behind what Italy did?

An early response would have been in January. Not for implementation, but at least acknowledgement, taking it seriously, foreshadowing, and putting together a plan. Outside of a ban on China travel those things didn't happen until about Friday.

You’re burying the headline. How was the sandwich?

True but given that it happened at Longbranch, anyone at that event could theoretically get tested because they can claim direct contact with a confirmed case. Given that, I would expect to hear from someone else who was there.
The DJ self identified he/she was positive to Linn and Johnson counties since he/she has performed at both in the past couple weeks. Linn County released that Longbranch was one of the venues and all patrons on 3/6 and 3/13 should self quarantine for 14 days. But per KCRG, Johnson County refuses to release where the DJ performed. The media and public should be calling out Johnson county since people at the Johnson county venues could be spreading and not have a clue about it when this is one controllable instance.

Why in the **** would they do this?

Don't start worrying about that. For the most part viral pneumonia doesn't cause pus and pleuritis (adhesions to your chest wall) like bacterial pneumonia. Viral pneumonia causes inflammation, which can lead to reduced lung function when the virus is present but if you live thorough the viral insult your post infection lung capacity should be okay.
