So my 50th is coming up in 2 weeks. Just got my "invitation" to become part of the club. Do any of you do this and is it at all worth it? It's $12 for a year and I get a trunk organizer. :)

AARP is like the mafia. They spend a lot of money sending out those "invitations" that can seem more like threats. They almost make them seem like it's your obligation to join and why haven't you done so yet. I throw them away without opening them.

Keep getting **** from them. Never do it but thinking maybe it would be worth it for hotel/senior discounts alone although as a member of some of the hotel frequent thingies I seem to get it anyway if I book direct. Downside would be I hate old conservative farts and they are a collective of old conservative farts while I am senior advisor to the Che Guevara Revolutionary Brigade of Minnesota.

They also have rental car discounts and airport parking discounts. I don't know if airport parking near MSP is included. Anymore pretty much everybody Ubers to the airport rather than parking, don't they.

Not trying to throw this in the cave but your comment surprises me. Most conservatives that I know don't join because they are opposed to the left leaning politics that they perceive that the AARP supports.

Full disclosure: AARP has always claimed to be apolitical.

Maybe I missed your sarcasm?

When I lived at the towers there was a guy who lived down the hall who was 29. He received massive amounts of stuff from AARP. None of us on the floor had any idea why that kept happening.

My 13 year old son is constantly receiving AARP info and different retirement information. We tried to figure it out and it appears he got on some mailing list and we can't get him off of it.

If you are a democrat go for it they donate lots to dems

My dad was a member of AARP. He decided not to renew this year and is getting direct mail about 2x a week that his membership has lapsed. Yesterday they called about renewing.

The argument can be made they have good discounts. Their newsletter has some OK articles of interest for seniors. But it does seem like an organization that if someone did some investigative journalism, there would be some high level executives making big coin. Cash coming in from memberships & getting a cut off all the partnerships with insurance, travel, etc. companies. i guess that does sound like the mafia:)

Republican Party loved AARP until the healthcare crisis and then accused them of profiting off of health care when it was convenient to diss Obama and AARP as brethren. Not sure what the current party position is since nobody is doing anything about healthcare anymore. My most conservative friend thinks AARP is a socialist group while he sits and collects his S.S. and gets his healthcare via medicare. I just consider them conservative because they are old fats and most of the old farts I know are crusty old conservatives. Crusty old conservatives think EVERYONE else is too liberal even groups that support programs they are benefiting from.
