ISU press conference about band situation

The Band Director obviously put the students into harm's way. Ignoring orders. Putting CHILDREN at risk in a hostile environment. Almost causing a riot.....that no one saw.... Then the University of Illinois - Iowa City Campus didn't do anything

Ames, Iowa: You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy
You're missing the point but ok.

From the interests of the U of I athletic department that makes perfect sense.

But the first thing his department should have told any alleged victims, of course, was to report it to the police immediately. I'm not sure he (or his underlings did that). That's just the right thing to do, regardless of outcome. All too often, university officials at many, many universities fail to do that or, even worse, actively, seek to have reports handled "informally".

So I agree he may have been "decent" from the perspective of athletic department public relations (which is, of course, part of his job) but he was anything but decent as a human being if he failed to advocate strenuously for alleged victims and witnesses to report things to the police.

Agreed.

Time to call for the resignation of the Iowa Director of Bands

Marching his students directly into a crowd of people, endangering them and those who where trying to exit to field, and failure to follow orders for Iowa State on safety concerns.

Iowa needs to release them if they don't resign

Very confusing as to why the band director would do this. I'd like to hear what they were thinking when they decided to leave through the crowded entrance as opposed to the one completely clear of people.

I've NEVER been more proud of the leadership and character at Iowa State from the top.

Now, Greek Affairs is a different story but this isn't the time to get into that

U.N. Jefferson would like a word.

OK, but at this point more than a week later both universities have made that point ad nauseum. And as of this morning neither police department in either of the two cities has anything to go investigate.

People are free to speculate on what that might mean in terms of the veracity of the social media accounts that were the spark for this whole deal. JP has every right to be indignant about how things played out in the media.

This. Anybody that been to a rivals road game would know better, or should. And than to do it marching and playing your way forcibly into a crowd defies common sense. If our director did that I'd want him fired. You're in charge of the band and they are your responsibility. The crowd, on the other hand, is largely just a collective of random fans not being directed other than "The exit's this way." No excusing any possible a-holes in the crowd but it seems like the group under "command" was doing almost everything it could to provoke the home crowd.

This (the lack of police reporting) tells me that the Iowa students/parents aren't interested in legal repercussions for the fans, they are interested in holding their own leaders accountable. Had they not made a fuss, they might not have gotten any answers as to why the band was put in that situation.

We should support them by continuing to be open with the facts of what happened that evening. It's not the band students' fault they were purposefully and against the advice of professionals marched into a bottle-necked crowd. If they felt they had to sensationalize it to get some answers from the Iowa Administration, that's a sad state of affairs but they were put in a ****** situation by people they should be able to trust to know better.

One side of this story brought compassion, factual information and a thorough investigation. The other was childish, dramatic and couldn't muster up one piece of evidence. It's crazy Hawk fans can be delusional enough to believe the latter. I feel like the phrase "victim shaming" is a new one to the Hawk fan base, I've seen it used incorrectly dozens on times on social media.

This angle probably hasn't been discussed enough. This is huge.

An acquaintance of mine who is a Hawkeye fan and has friends in the band said that the band members were in a confrontation of some kind (likely was was described here, with lots of people shoving into a small space), and when they brought it to U of I administration, they were told it would be taken care of internally ... a week went by, U of I administration did nothing, so then they started getting mad at their own leadership, that's what led to social media postings. He also said most band members were upset with their own leadership and the police (1 from U of I and 3 from polk co.) who were feckless and basically did nothing for putting them in that situation.

As dumb as that sounds, it makes sense, particularly with the band member Corey Knopp posts.

Kudos to Dr. Wintersteen also. Randy tried to bait her into making a public account of how she was treated last year in Iowa City and she took the high road and didn't add flame to the fire.
whow.. that was a real thing?
