There is a monster difference between Oklahoma and Ohio State vs Iowa
Wait wait... Iowa does not challenge nearly every year for a conference title. They've been in the conference championship one time since 2004. That's obviously better than what Iowa State has done, but this isn't the early 2000's anymore.
As an Iowa fan, Campbell and ISU definitely have our attention. Growing a program takes time, and Campbell has done it well (faster than Ferentz did at Iowa, so far actually). I think this is the year they get us, and who knows when we'll be able to get them back. I hope I'm wrong.
For Matt Campbell to match Kirk Ferentz’s numbers, he would have to have THIS resume over the next 17 years:
•Average 7.8 wins**
•Have 7 AP top-25 finishes
•Finish 5 times in the AP top-10
•Go to 16 bowl games
•Go to 3 BCS/NY6 games (Win 1)
•Produce 23 All-Americans
•Win an AP COY
•Have players win: AP POY, O’Brien Award, Mackey Award x2, Groza Award, Doak Walker Award, Jim Thorpe Award, Outland Trophy x2
**Cy fans will say, “BuT tHeY pLaY iN tHe BiG tEn WeSt”... take away the last 4 years for KF (37 wins) and MC will have to average 7.4 wins to match KF.
Something tells me you’d take that. I’d say Kirk is a pretty good coach
What I don't understand from some Iowa fans on this site, and also fans I've talked to, is that they think that we Iowa State fans are expecting us to be national champions in the next few years. No, no rational fan actually thinks that. We would love for our floor to be 7 wins and our ceiling to be 10, and then if a really special year happens and we get higher, GREAT. But I have not heard one Cyclone fan talk like all of a sudden we're going to be competing for a playoff spot year in and year out.

I wouldn't say Iowa is the team I'd strive to be like, I'd say something more on the lines of Oklahoma State, which I think could be reasonable. Having a couple or a few seasons in a row with 10 wins or more, consistently winning 8-9 games a year, 7 being a bad year, and maybe having a break out year. Iowa's a little below that level. So you want to be at a level that is pretty much Iowa. I get that. When I responded to an ISU fan who said they wanted be at the next level, I got attacked for being unreasonable.

I will buy a little below that, but damned little.
Iowa is not insurmountably below Oklahoma State, but Oklahoma State is for sure better and has consistently been the better team since 2010. Since then, OSU has had six 10 win or better seasons compared to Iowa's 1. They've also played in 2 Cotton Bowls, a Fiesta Bowl, and a Sugar Bowl during that time period.I will buy a little below that, but damned little.
I really hope we land Lachey.
Reading the last few pages of posts. ISU wants to be on par with Iowa (which they ARE right now). As an Iowa fan I simply disagree with a few things such as recruiting and schedule strength in the upcoming years (Big west is not going to be terrible much longer IMO, and the Big 12 is going to be adjusting to a lot of new coaches and to ISU being relevant threat to win, which is great)
ISU fans hating Iowa, I get that, I really do. I just do not understand the thinking the ISU is suddenly the better program in the state or the most hyped. Right now I think they are both about the same with Iowa still slightly better in the hyped area. Now, if ISU gets to 9-3,10-2 (I think it is possible FWIW) then this will be a different conversation. But right now, 2 8-5 seasons and 3 big wins, with 1 on the road and by close margins at that, I am not ready to label ISU better or more hyped at this point.
ISU has arrived at the party for sure.
I think that starts to change. The Big Ten West will always be terrible
I think that starts to change.
Purdue is getting better and has a good young coach
NW has Fitz and they are always in any game they play
Nebraska..... I think they are going to be very good
Wisconsin has their tradition and recruit well
Minnesota is improving
Iowa is above average and getting better with recruiting
Illinois is perplexing because they are in a recruiting hotbed, but are not good and have not been for a while.
While I don't think Iowa State is above Iowa right now, considering we haven't won against them the past two years and both teams have had good seasons, I do think we are probably more hyped than Iowa. Iowa is right where they usually are, which is trying to battle for the top spot in the Big 10 West and possibly being ranked. Iowa State is being brought up as the outright third best team in the Big 12, having the best defense in the Big 12, showing up on "must watch games in 2019", etc. The hype is larger than Iowa's because we were a laughing stock in the Big 12 and also the country, and all of a sudden we are being talked about as a team that could make the conference championship game.Reading the last few pages of posts. Listen, I know what you're getting at, but the past two years have been the only time we've argued recently whether Iowa State is better than Iowa..
