Caution: this dance was not as safe as they said it was.

For the 2nd British Invasion (new wave synth pop), which is an essential 80s 'sound' for me, a few songs immediately come to mind:

Gary Numan "Cars" (was released in late 1979, but didn't chart here until spring, 1980)

Talk Talk "Talk Talk"

Duran Duran "Girls on Film"

Bananarama "Robert De Niro's Waiting"

OK. I'll admit to staying up late to watch the unedited Girls on Film video on USA network when they used to play videos at midnight.

Most of my #1 go tos are already posted. Specifically A-Ha and Flock of Seaguls

Makes me think of Grand Theft Auto Vice City and the radio stations that would play when you stole a car.

Basically any song that exclusively features a synthesizer, 100% screams 80s to me.

Duran Duran is so quintessentially 80s. They even had some hits in the 90s, like Ordinary World, but they will never NOT scream 80s to me.

I was born in 79, so I grew up in the 80s.

Some of the most lasting 80s memories for me are actual videos on MTV. That was the era when you had to have a video for your song to make it big.

This was technically released in 79, but it was the first ever video on MTV, and it's as 80s as it gets.

It's puzzling to my 4 year old, though. He keeps asking, "Is that a girl or a boy?" and not believing me when I say it's guys in the band.

Show him some Twisted Sister, and full on glam style Motley Cru or RATT. That'll really throw him.

Speaking or RATT, this video really piqued my interest in the 80s. I found a fetish before I was even old enough to know what fetishes were. The chick in this video really did it for me.
