Cougar In Des Moines

Part of that is because they probably get a hundred calls every year about a mountain lion being spotted when most likely it was just some feral house cat running across the road and the person doesn't know what they're talking about. And even if it was a lion, what are they supposed to do? They can travel something like 30 or 40 miles in a day. "Thanks for the call" is about the only response there is.

I don’t think regular house cats get that big to be tall enough to look over woven wire with all four feet on the ground in a ditch.

Obviously, but people are stupid. I'm on a lot of hunting related forums and you wouldn't believe how many times I've seen people post trail camera pictures of "mountain lions" that are very obviously a house cat. And that's from HUNTERS. People who, you would think, know better.

Again, even if it was a mountain lion, what's the DNR to do? Gather up all the conservation officers for a county wide cougar hunt?

Why have the DNR do it? Just hire these guys:

Perhaps stop denying that they exist, that was my only point.

Again, the only reason they have had to change their tune is due to the existence of trail cameras and people actually hitting them with cars or shooting them.

Have a friend that works for the DNR who says until approximately 15 years ago when someone hit and killed a cougar in western IA, there was widespread opinion that these cats were not in Iowa. Now established they are here. Majority of reported sightings still turn out to be bobcats or some other animal but some are accurate. Also says common conspiracy theory is DNR has been secretly releasing cougars to combat high deer populations.
