I realize a Hawkeye fan coming to a Cyclone board starting a thread about predicting the upcoming game is just begging to get trashed on, but I thought I'd try it anyway.

I am looking to see what your guys' genuine thoughts are on what you think the outcome of the game with be. Over the last 5+ years, I have gone into every single ISU-Iowa game very nervous and very uptight with the thought that it was going to be a close, close game... anything but a sure thing for either team. I remember watching the '02 with a bunch of ISU friends in Cincinnati, we went outside at halftime and they asked my feelings on the game. I could only say that I didn't think Iowa was going to hold on and that Seneca was going to eat up the Hawks in the 2nd half. Ouch. Did he ever.

I can't stand the "ISU Superbowl" argument that fans give out. As a fan, I care about the ISU-Iowa as much, if not more, than any other game on the schedule. It's circled once the schedule comes out and once this week gets here, it's officially ISU Week... the slowest workweek of the year. I love this week. I love rivalry. I even love the smack talk, when done the right way.

So anyway, I am looking to see who you honestly think is going to come out on top and if it will be close as some people think (or not, as the initial spread shows). I know loyalty comes into play when making the pick, and I understand how most people will be biased in their predictions. I am not really looking for a final score, just trying to gauge everyone's expectations of the game.

That said, here's mine. I understand if I am crucified after posting this (I would do the same to a Clone coming on an Iowa board). I really think that the attitude has pulled a 180 in Iowa City. The team has been waiting for this game all year and has been preparing for it during practice even before ISU week. I see the fire back in the Iowa team that has been gone for 2+ years. Like I said earlier, every year I have thought the game would be close (and some years I have predicted ISU to win). This year, I see Iowa winning, and winning big. I like our front four on D and their ability to control whomever they want. Kroul and King inside are going to have their way, and our D ends are extremely quick and athletic. Our LBs are very skilled and I think if our front 7 can do their job, ISU will find it hard to get into the endzone. ISU might be able to move the ball a fair amount, but I don't see many trips into the endzone. Iowa has proven they can stop the dual threat QB (see Juice Williams vs. Iowa), but that will the challenge in this game. I am not worried at all about ISU's run game, conversely I think Iowa is going to be able to run at will with Greene off-tackle. Getting Moeaki back is going to let us do a lot of things up the middle on pass plays. Myers has shown just how good he is, so putting those two out on the field should give Iowa a good advantage and offer some mismatches. The key with be Ricky Roll Stanzi. If he can't handle his first, big start, Iowa could be in deep trouble if the Clones bring 8 or even 9 in the box. Moeaki should help him out, though.

I think Iowa wins, and they win big. I don't know how big, but I don't see it staying in single-digits.

We have the rest of the week to talk trash, hopefully this is the one thread where we can talk some serious football (and maybe a LITTLE trash thrown in).

I understand if you want to take shots at me after posting my thoughts, but I thought I'd see what you guys think about this game.

Prepare to be disappointed again. Sorry, your post is well thought and sincere but your readig waaay too much into games against lesser opponents than Drake. I seriously think ISU will win by 10+ points. I've heard all the arguments, don't care. Gut feeling on this one. I didn't predict anywhere near this last year for what its worth.

I predict Iowa will win. Would love to see us kick Iowa's butt but don't see it happening. Iowa will control the trenches. Only way we win is if we create turnovers.

I'll bite

This year, I see Iowa winning, and winning big. I like our front four on D and their ability to control whomever they want. Kroul and King inside are going to have their way, and our D ends are extremely quick and athletic. Iowa State will combat this by short, quick passes, screens and misdirections. The Maine game the D-line was caught overpursuing quite a bit, that won't work against the speed ISU will bring.

Our LBs are very skilled and I think if our front 7 can do their job, ISU will find it hard to get into the endzone. ISU might be able to move the ball a fair amount, but I don't see many trips into the endzone. One thing REALLY jumped out at me watching Iowa against Maine. When they spread the field, 4 wide, Iowa had NOBODY in the middle. If King and his buddies charge up field both our QB's will be able to run straight up the gut. ISU will struggle in the conventional run game, but should eat up yards with screens and slants.

, conversely I think Iowa is going to be able to run at will with Greene off-tackle. Getting Moeaki back is going to let us do a lot of things up the middle on pass plays. If he can't handle his first, big start, Iowa could be in deep trouble if the Clones bring 8 or even 9 in the box. Moeaki should help him out, though. Moeaki has to have a big game for Iowa to win. Iowa's receivers still have yet to overly impress me and I am almost positive you will see 8 in the box, as many as 7 on the line and single coverage outside. The seam should be wide open for both tight ends, if Stanzi can recognize it.

I think Iowa wins, and they win big. I don't know how big, but I don't see it staying in single-digits. I don't drink the most Koolaid around here but I don't see Iowa pulling this out. I see ISU by six with both teams in the 20's. Iowa will milk clock, eating possessions but both teams will score some points.

There are just so many unknowns on both teams...I am having trouble even making a prediction. I believe that the game will be won/lost in the first two drives on each side. If Stanzi is nervous, hurried, not poised, he will be rattled for the game, and the Hawks will be faced with the prospect of going to JC or sticking with a rattled Stanzi.

Same goes for Arnaud/Bates. Can they handle their first foray into a hostile crowd/environment? I have a feeling that one team's QB will turn the ball over leading to a quick score. Whoever is the beneficiary of that wins.

I also think that we will learn a lot about the Iowa running backs, which have looked good against bad competition. Greene hasn't been hit like he will be Saturday...will he be durable and conditioned enough to withstand?

I'm going against the grain, and predicting a relatively close, low-scoring game. The Iowa offense will be worse than advertised, and the ISU defense better than advertised.

I really didn't even gloss over that because I'm tired and want to go to bed. I'll read it all in the morning. I'll put in my two cents that Iowa wins by 7.

I-State - 24
Iowa - 13

Iowa is so overrated in the eyes of their fans it's laughable........

ISU 456
Iowa (2)

I came up with this only because Ditka was rumored to be the next ISU coach. (I think I started that rumor by the way!)

Neither team is so good that they can overcome a bunch of mistakes. And both will need momentum. Whichever team makes the least mistakes and capitalizes off of the other team's mistakes will win.

I think that Chizik has the players' heads on straight. I think ISU will be better able to overcome a few missteps than Iowa. Iowa's offseason troubles will boil to the surface when the chips are down.

storminspank -

Honest question, have you watched ISU play this year?
I did not see the Kent State game. I wasn't going to pay to get the Sports Pak to watch the first one either. So, admittedly, I have not watched a full game of the clones.

I can only justify my opinion on ISU from talking with my Clone friends (I do take their opinions seriously, and I would consider them "true" ISU fans - but I don't hold that against them). That's part of the reason I asked the question over here, as I am looking to see what you guys think will happen, how your team stacks up, etc... This is the first year I haven't seen games of ISU leading up to the Iowa game, so I have to take my ISU info from ISU alums/friends/boosters, stats sheets, Gametracker info, etc...

Truthfully, I am basing my opinion of the game primarily on how I feel about this Iowa team. I haven't felt this good about our team since the '04 season. If we had a proven at QB, I'd feel better, but with the game being at Kinnick and the way I know our D can play, I have a lot of faith in the Hawks this year (which is quite different than years past, as I mentioned before).

I am anxious to see how Iowa does against your athletes, esp. at the QB position.

I think your post is thought out, but you are silly to think this game will be a blowout.

This will be my 7th Iowa-Iowa State Game. What I have learned:
-Iowa will always be favored
-Iowa will almost always be the better team on paper
- The game isn't played on paper.
- Typically whenever Iowa loses this game, they've been outcoached; when ISU loses, they've been outmanned.
-The game will be closer than predicted by Hawks fans and the media

What I think about this game:
- Both teams will play hard
- Both coaching staffs will put together game plans exposing both teams' weaknesses
- The team with the better plan will win the game. Period.
- Iowa has weaknesses; they just haven't been exposed due to inferior opponents.
- Iowa fans can never admit the above bullet point
- Final Score: Iowa State = 27, Iowa = 24. Margin of error = +/- 3 points

Iowa isn't going to win the Big XI. They aren't there talent-wise. Beating 2 crap teams doesn't make you good. Those crap teams haven't pushed Iowa. It will be close, but you can't see that because you blew out Maine and FIU lol

It really baffles me how so many Hawk fans are predicting a huge margin of victory for them. It seems like deja vu all over again in a way...last year Iowa was perceived to be the much better team, but it was clearly shown that steamrolling bad competition doesn't make you a world-beater.

Now, ISU has actually beaten their first two opponents, and Hawks are still telling us how bad we are.

Question: Do Hawk fans have a really, really short term memory? If I were them, I would have a bit of humility and caution about this game.

I did not see the Kent State game. I wasn't going to pay to get the Sports Pak to watch the first one either. So, admittedly, I have not watched a full game of the clones.

And there it is. Not worth responding if you're going to be making predictions without scouting the other team a bit. And talking with friends who are ISU fans does not count as scouting.

Can't argue with anything you said; you pretty much hit the nail right on the head. Your "What You've Learned" section is describes my feelings every single year going into this game. I don't know why, but this year it's changed for me... for better or worse. Maybe I am just being ignorant this year? I'm not sure.
