Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

Some kid from New York. will probably offer if we miss out on terry, carton, watts, and a few others that actually have offers. hawk central had the article but I dont know how to link it. Not that tech savvy. I did not realize Iowa was recruiting so many PG. Not the usual Fran stuff. I am used to him putting all of his eggs in one basket.

Thanks for the info. Do you know his name?

I dont think so. But why did he get booted from his HS team? Its a weird recruitment to me is all.
No real explanation, he went there solely for basketball and they catered their schedule around him being on the team, then he got injured before playing a game. He's not on social media and doesn't have a handler or coach who is trying to keep his name in the spotlight, so its been few and far between on updates about him.

The talent is certainly there though, and his injuries were bone based not ligament or something along those lines, which should be a positive for him in his basketball future.

If we are allowed to us sagarin polling, Iowa was better at the end of the year, but we cant because you are not allowed to do that for ranked teams on this site. So if you pick the evidence you want, sure, ISU was better than Iowa. I even agree with that. No reason they should lose to an inferior opponent this year and going forward.

All the computer rankings had Iowa slightly ahead of ISU last season in both FB and MBB. I do not like that fact, but it was the simple fact they did.

We had two good football teams and two bad basketball teams.

I think saying that Iowa had slightly better teams last year is not saying they have a better program looking forward, though. That is a different matter.

Iowa's basketball roster is an unbalanced mess with guys who are fringe P6 players at best or who cannot play two-ways. Iowa State is bringing in maybe the best recruiting class in school history, THT is going to be really good really fast, and it retains a ton of talent off a team that was admittedly rather frustrating and inconsistent last year. Things are already looking up. I actually like Garza and Bohannon, but would not trade them for Wiggi and Lard.

The Hawkeye football program is actually in a good/okay spot right now. The thing is, the Iowa State one is surging for the first time in a generation (early McCarney?) or two (even the Bruce era?) and not looking like it is slowing down. The showdowns between Campbell and Ferentz, and by that I mean both Kirk and Brian, are going to be a hoot going forward.

Iowa had slightly better teams last year. That does not mean they have better programs going forward when you break down rosters, coaching, culture, and recruiting.

Thanks. Sounds like a Peter Jok situation to me

I will agree to disagree on football. I think both teams will be competative, but I am thinking Iowa is going to continue to improve. Our recruiting is picking up from the middle 2012-2014 range. It is actually consistently better than the whole Ferentz era over the last 3 years.

You dont think he could be good? I would be OK with Iowa taking a flier on the kid if we do not get our top guys.
I do not think he can compete at a P5 level. Maybe by Jr year if all development goes well, but I just don't see it.

You'd be okay with taking a flier on Samake if you miss on your top guys, but are questioning if ISU should be going after Mercedus Leech?

See? We can be friendly with each other, Hawks and Cyclones. :)

I just saw a lot of talking past each other on here about last year -- the computer rankings did prefer Iowa, if only slightly -- versus talking about the trajectory of the programs right now. And I agree with you, Ferentz is having a bit of a late career Indian summer right now. Watching two good football teams play in a heated rivalry game going forward will be fun.

Some of this is subjective. That is the point. We do not know until it happens. I just think Prohm is about to stomp on McCaffery. Football, on the other hand, I can see being very competitive between two programs that are performing well for the next few years.

I hated the ending at Jack Trice last year, but that was a great football game nonetheless.

Unless the inferior team spends all off season planning for us and makes the game the #1 priority for the year.

I’m not ready to believe that last year’s football season for Iowa State is any indication of how the program will perform moving forward. I think Iowa State benefitted a lot from some turnover luck and being overlooked by their opponents. If they can put together another season like last year, I will recalibrate, but right now I believe Iowa State is more likely to miss a bowl game this upcoming season than they are to win 8 games again.
