We spent a weekend here last summer on a whim and it was fantastic for a short trip. We took the kiddo and did some kayaking, hit up a 10,000 sq ft antique house and a pizza joint in centerville and sat by the water. All we had to do was ask and maintenance came and lit up their fire pit for us. The front desk even gave us free smore supplies. It was a great time and the people were awesome.

They do have boat rentals on site but everything non-motorized (kayaks, paddle boards, etc.) was a first come, first serve type of thing. It was nice not paying a single dollar for extra stuff at the resort. Oh, there’s a water park on site too, which also comes with the room.

We were sitting out on the patio after dark and had 9 dear walking within 100 yds of us. My son got a huge kick out of that. They are definitely not scared of people. One of the workers drove a gator within 20 ft and they just stood there and looked at him.

We are definitely going back this year. We plan on getting a cabin and taking some our immediate family with us.

This is pretty neat. The silo house in Titonka. I don't know if it's worth a whole weekend though. But you can hit the West Bend Grotto after that, which is not far from Titonka.

All just across the border.

Niagara Cave near Harmony, MN. Actually just a mile north of the MN/IA border. This one is in the middle of nowhere.

If you're the outdoorsy type and enjoy what everyone else is saying about NE Iowa. This is an extension of that. Lanesboro, MN. Bike, hike, canoe, kayak, tubing, golf. It's a historic little town that's in a very scenic bluff on the Root River.

If you're ever on I90 just passing through. Drop in on the Spam Museum in Austin, MN. It's free and actually a pretty neat little museum covering the history of Hormel. They even have samples! ;) Some you can't even buy in grocery stores.

This is what I was going to say. I am not a small town person but you can't beat NE Iowa and SW Wisconsin when it comes to beautiful scenery, hiking, fishing and many small little towns. Just be prepared to be stared at with a "who are you and why are you here?" look on their face.
We should give a target though. I don't know how well it recovered from the storms a few years ago but McGregor is the small, small town of choice. For slightly more amenities go Decorah.

Do a cabin down there about every year. Highly recommend it. If you're looking for an easy getaway with another couple or with some extended family, the cabins are well worth the value. And they're nice and modern.

The Amanas are good for unique items and really good food. Plus you can buy homemade stuff like jams, canned veggies, etc.

And get them early from the looks of it. This thread reminded me to go and reserve one for the end of the summer. The big ones that sleep 10+ are booked every weekend until September.

Whiterock/Garst Farm in Coon Rapids. Tons of history + actual mountain biking in Iowa.

If you want actual mountain biking in Iowa, you can't beat the Decorah Human Powered Trails.

I'm going to leave work and do just that in about 30 minutes. Will follow it up with some Pulpit Rock.

NE Iowa is the answer to the original question, although if you wanted to kayak, this wouldn't be a great weekend. The Upper Iowa, Turkey, and Yellow Rivers are going to be a little too high.
