Random Thoughts XI (Eleven Pipers Piping)

BDK statements always makes me think of advice I give my son. He learned some over vacation recently. Never lean against counters in a restroom to wash hands. About 1/4 of the time, and about 3/4 of the time in the parks library second floor, you will get pants that look like you peed them.

3rd floor men's room by the elevator will get the unaware, too. Almost always pools of water on that counter, and one of the sinks backs up constantly.

Yep, gotta account for nicknames for sure, and don't forget initials. We thought about a name combination that would have given him the initials DOH. DOH! Dodged a bulled there.

The big trend lately is "creative" spellings. I hate that. Kid is going to be constantly having to correct people on his name spelling because you decided to name them Jenyfer or something equally idiotic.

I'm in agreement with most of you in here that I like classic name, which seem to be making a comeback.

My pet peeve is using a top ten name on purpose. You're going to have 3 kids in your class with the same name. Even if they all spell it different. Sheesh.

Along with this, make sure that the kid's initials don't spell something, especially something that will get them teased incessantly.

I remember when some classic names were old lady names and some of them are making a comeback: Grace, for example was rarely seen as a handle on anyone younger than 60 when I was a kid, now it is a trendy girl's name. It almost ended up being my eldest's middle name even though 30 years ago it was coming back a little bit but nothing like it is today. That daughter ended up with a given name that was extremely uncommon because we wanted to name her after my mother. Mom's given name didn't do it for us but her childhood nickname (most people didn't even know her given name through school) was perfect because it was also a feminine version of my ex-wife's father's name who was no longer with us. We thought the combination of given name and shortened version was unique even though the shortened version was not terribly uncommon. Low and behold my current neighbor has the exact same given name / shortened name combination. To make a long story even longer it checked the boxes of tied to family and had a name version that a CEO could have on her door and demand respect rather than snickers.

I like some of the classics like Cora.

Finally I would like to steer CG away from a client's name from years ago. I had a client whose given name was Nancy!. Yes the exclamation mark was part of her first name. She thought it was some sort of conspiracy that her IT department wouldn't give her an email address that had her name spelled correctly. I didn't feel it was worth the effort to inform her that that was a restricted symbol in email addresses at the time. What were her parents possibly thinking?!

Along with creative spellings is intentionally naming the kid and then using their middle name essentially as their given name. You are constantly correcting. I know because my middle name was my grandfathers. He died 3 days after I was born and I was already named so they called me by my middle name from that time forward. You are either always correcting people or just putting up with them calling you something that you don't go by.

Soooo...my choices for boys were very boring and very traditional, but as I mentioned upthread I had good reasons for the choices. My granddaughters run the gamut from classic to common to androgynous, though:

I have never liked the name Mackenzie mainly because the first Mackenzie I can remember is the one below and she had so many highly publicized problems it soured me on the name.

How about siblings named Rocky, RoCarol, Rogina, and Serafina? I encountered those names for siblings in a case long ago. It made me wonder why they dropped naming consistency for the 4th kid.

I worked really hard early on to NOT think about that (I doubt my son & DIL know who that is). Thanks SO much for reminding me!
