Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

He says he's a 2 guard. He's got a 7 foot wingspan and is still only 17 so I think his ceiling is really really high

You watched him play a lot last year in AAU?

Nope, but his shooting stats were really bad. Could be a small sample size, but the jumper on his highlight videos looks flat, so it wouldn’t surprise me if those are representative of his abilities. I don’t see the athleticism or quickness for him to play the guard or wing positions, but people who have seen him more often than I have might disagree.

I would have no problem admitting he is the higher ranked player. The gap will probably be very small and, like I said, they are both really good gets for their respective programs.

You said Joe would continue to drop in the rankings. He moved up 1 spot in the final Rivals update.

I think he will drop in 247's final composite while THT takes a large jump

Interesting you watching highlight videos of him. I guess I don't even know what his shooting numbers were. A quick Google search shows this below but I have no clue what his stats were outside of this

Izzo was on hand to watch Horton-Tucker play at the Adidas Uprising Gauntlet Finale last week in South Carolina. In the five games Horton-Tucker played, the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 18.2 points, seven rebounds and one assist per contest. He shot 42 percent from the field, including 37.5 percent (12-for-32) from 3-point range, and also recorded six blocks and six steals.

Horton-Tucker was with Team Rose at the Adidas Finale because his regular AAU team, Mac Irvin Fire, did not advance to Peach Jam as part of the Nike EYBL. He played in 12 games from April to mid-May with Mac Irvin Fire, averaging 13.8 points and 5.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists while shooting 43 percent from the field and 30 percent (15-for-50) from deep.

The 2nd paragraph is what I was referring to- 43% FG and 30% 3PT is bad, and I recall his FT% was somewhere in the 60s. Again, he could have improved since then, hard to tell. He’s young, so that is entirely possible.

I don't think it is that hard to tell. All you have to do is Google his name and every article is praising him as one of the best to come out of The Chicago Powerhouse.

Those tweets certainly hurt your credibility @benjimill

Not really. As you said, he has a 7 foot wingspan, so I would expect him to be able to dunk well. He doesn’t appear to be getting that high off the ground in those dunks- on many of his dunks his head barely gets to the net. His vertical jump probably isn’t even 30 inches. And I haven’t seen many highlights of him blowing by guys on the perimeter- most of it is him using his body/strength to create space and get to the rim. That’s not going to work as well in college (most teams that aren’t Iowa have plenty of big and strong players too). Not saying that he is a bad athlete, because he’s not, but he is no better than average as a P5 guard, IMO.

He's also 16

Again, entirely possible. I never claimed to have the most up-to-date information on him. I’m basing my opinion off what I have seen, which could be entirely outdated. I am more than willing to admit I am wrong if that is the case.

He's 17. The entitled Patrick McCaffrey is already 18 if you want to compare

Who do you think played against better competition, weiskamp or THT?

Look where his head and feet are; that’s how you can tell how high someone jumped. His feet reach their highest point at the guy on the left’s knees. Really impressive dunk, but still doesn’t look like he jumped that high.

Better buy stock now before it’s too late. Horton-Tucker continues to rise and explode this spring. The confidence this young man is playing with is evident as Horton-Tucker feels he can do whatever he wants on the floor – and for the most part – he’s right. The junior wing dropped 33 points on 13-of-22 shooting. Horton-Tucker appears to get better every time we lay eyes on him. His ball handling and explosiveness off the bounce has hit a new level. An elite slasher, Horton-Tucker excels at hanging and finishing around the rim and in traffic. When you add in his ability to pop off triples, Horton-Tucker is one of the toughest matchups in the EYBL. Remember this name in July as we expect high major programs to blow up his offer list.

Hmmm.....is that why Bill Self offered him? He had to fill in the end of his bench with a "no better than average P5 guard?"

You're really straining here. A troll attempt, for sure, but a really bad one.

Has anyone else noticed our Iowa trolls have really reduced in quality recently? I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Well I pledged to stop trolling to that has something to do with it.

Also, we need MVC to come back around.

I didn't make my reach wide enough, good point. Some of our resident non-Iowa State posters have decreased in quality; that's not just limited to Iowa.

MVC was a trashbin, too. C'mon. He makes you like look Albert Einstein.
