I've loved his play so far. He had a rough start today, but passing came around.

HOWEVER...he has the type of foot mobility and elusiveness that only the extremely elderly and quadriplegics could envy.

That the coaching staff was somehow unaware of that to the point we tried to run him 3 times...seemingly on purpose...is............troubling.

Hell, I only needed to see it once to realize that it was a bad idea and should only done when literally no other option existed.

The receivers missed some crucial catches today. You have to help out a QB who is 4 games in and you have been catching for years.

It's on him, not coaches. They weren't intended for him to run.

Kempt really taking a beating on here. Yes, he has areas that could be improved. BUT, without him the last 5 games where would we be and would our expectations be as high as they are? Parks not an option. Lanning is more important on defense & can't be expected to go both ways. Noland, if he was a better than Kempt the coaches would be playing him. Without Park, nobody would have imagined we go 4-1. We should be happy that we had someone ready to step in when needed. Not many picked us for 6 or more wins this year. Yes, it is frustrating and hurts to lose, because we're no longer expecting to every week (we're not playing (Kansas). They will continue to need our positive support to finish out this year.

Bad thread title.

Before this thread turns into a debate on whether to keep playing him, a freshman, or a guy that may or may not actually be on the team, I'll add again that he's like most average-decent QBs, i.e. game managers, that needs a legit running game to operate at his best.

I'll also add that Mayfield just threw a pick on a crucial play in the end zone, and Rudolph did the same thing earlier. Apparently no one's perfect.

Glad we have Kempt, he's won games for us.
But when he keeps the ball, it looks like he's running in pudding and just wants to drop before contact....not helpful from the 1 yard line.
In hindsight, this game felt like the Texas game.
There for the taking, but the offense left me head scratching my head.

He's what we've got and he is what he is. He just can't quite make the throw to Ryen and I think Murdock. Those were TDs with a good throw. That said, running him was stupid. I have trouble hammering anyone too hard because Manning is playing with a limited QB and a bad OL. That doesn't excuse some things but when parts of the field aren't available, especially the parts that WVU was vulnerable in, it's tough. It's not really on anyone, this was just bound to happen at some point.

there is a reason that Kempt is not the starting QB for Oregon State. He does make good reads most of the time, and can throw a decent ball. Also, he is pretty much all we have right now in terms of a guy you can trust. Had a couple deep shots today that would have been TDs with a little more arm, but again, that is what you get. Had a couple drops today too that would have been enough to win the game.

Since you must feel his no longer being at Oregon State has some significance, I would be interested in hearing what that is.

Yeah, the first seemingly designed run on, what, a 3rd and 4? That was just dumb. Asking him to do it again later in the game in critical spots was inexcusable.

I'm trusting that Lanning isn't 100 percent, but I'd rather throw it in short yardage than run Kempt in any scenario.

His lack of arm strength limits the throws he can make. Guy makes great decisions most of the time, just can't make all the throws. It is something ISU is going to have to live with. Very impressed with the way he has stepped up and found ways to keep the team going. The defense just needs to step up and get more stops. It would help a lot if the OL could run block at all.

Kempt has some short comings, but his accuracy and decision making is pretty good. I have along list of ISU QBs from the last 10 years that have certainly lacked his consistency.

The O-line's inability to get a push in the run game isn't helping his cause.

It's a team game. ISU blew a couple assignments on defense and handed WVU 14 points on a freaking platter today as well.

So are you saying he left the Oregon State team for lack of arm strength?

The guy is 4-1. I very much doubt we do that with Nolan or even Park for that matter.
Refs don't blow the Butler catch dead, Ryen catches that deep pass and were probably 5-0 with Kempt... if they dont run him on the goaline would be a great idea going forward.
He's the best we have, and honestly probably the best thing that could have happened to this team.

Ok, so Kempt didn't have a great game and we were still in a position to win the game. Bad games happen, he'll get over it and be fine next week. Kempt's best ability has been putting the ball in a position for our WRs to make plays -> they just didn't make enough of them today.
