Let's look at Minnesota or Illinois. How many football hires and basketball hires have they made in the last 10 years? What about other places like Rutgers?
Barta walked into a much different situation with football than Pollard did. The odds say that the next Iowa football coach will fail regardless of who makes the hire. Did Pollard fire McCarney too soon? who knows but he didn't do much after he left.
The majority of hires don't work out. That is why when you get a good guy you try like hell to hold on to him.
As far as basketball goes. Prohm has been to two straight NCAAs and a sweet sixteen. At this point that is a successful hire. If he fails later then it wasn't and you move on. Same with Rhoads.
Minnesota and Illinois have also fired their ADs for under performance and missing on coaching hires. Every AD knows they live and die by the hiring and firing of coaches. Pollard has largely been unsuccessful but yet he is still worshiped by the ISU fanbase.
