Iowa Football Recruiting

Early signing period will help programs like Iowa.

Something to watch, IMO, is whether Iowa will still keep offers on the table to kids that are verballed but do not sign during the early signing period.

Agree with this...especially the kids that verbal. That's a long period of time between the early date and the traditional date...

I wonder if there will be an increase in the number of kids that early sign but then want to back out of the LOI prior to the traditional date?

No way they pull offers simply for not signing during the early signing period.

Only reason that they should be allowed to back out is if there is a head coaching change, IMO.

That would be a horrible look for any school that did that.

Well if they are committed, why wouldnt they sign?

It would go against what Iowa says it stands for in recruiting and I don't think most schools have that kind of leverage with kids. Alabama, sure. Iowa, no. Plus, show me the last time that happened in basketball. Usually, the kids that want to wait are big time recruits. If you want a kid, you want a kid and you will wait for him. The early signing period is meant to get the kids on board that are ready and aren't going to change their minds so you can turn your focus solely on the kids you need to keep recruiting.

It would be especially dumb that late in the recruiting game to kick a kid out of your class for not committing when you want him to.

This lines up exactly with Iowa's recruiting policy. They dont want a kid to verbal to them unless they are fully committed. I would imagine KF and staff will expect the kids that are verballed prior to the early signing period to sign then. If they are not ready then I would think they would encourage them not to verbal yet. If they do not sign then Iowa would continue to recruit players at their position and they may be replaced.

Let's not forget it's the dumbest policy in the history of recruiting

No way that happens. They tell the kids that they are in charge in recruiting, and not signing doesn't mean they aren't committed. They tell the kids as long as they are committed they will stick with them. This would would be going back on their word. So what happens if 20 or 25 recruits say they want to wait until the later signing period to sign? You think Iowa would pull their offer and sign other kids? You are crazy if you think that.

If either Iowa or Iowa State pull offers from kids for not signing early, I won't post here for a year.
You also didn't answer my question. When has that happened in basketball?

You do realize I am only talking about recruits that have verballed prior to the early signing period, right?

I can think of one year, 2015, that Iowa has had over 20 verbals going into the first week of December.

I cant think of one kid in basketball that was verballed to a school prior to the early signing dates and didnt sign in November. Sure there are talented kids that wait until Spring but they havent committed anywhere most times.

If schools start threatening to pull offers to kids that won't sign, you will just have fewer kids committing before the early signing period which negates the benefit to begin with.

If Iowa goes this route, the coaches would make it clear to the kids up front before accepting their commitment that this is their expectation. Just like they do right now about the no visit policy.

Let's say John Waggoner commits to Iowa. In December, he says, I am still committed I am just not ready to sign yet. I won't be taking anymore visits I just want to make sure before I sign because it is a big decision. They aren't going to pull his offer. they will continue to try to get him to sign at the later date. If you have some low ranked recruit you could do that but those are the kids that want to sign early. Just look at how Iowa has to scramble when a kid decommits late. The options aren't always the best. Especially bc back up plans can now sign early.

Iowa pulled Eno's offer, I am sure they would do the same to Waggoner.

I think its 50/50 on whether they even go this route but if they decide to do it, the policy would be the same for all kids they recruit.

That was a totally different scenario.

Iowa will recruit to the end if they are the guys they want. Think Alaric Jackson, Noah Fant, Trey Creamer, Smith-Marsette in the last couple years.

If Iowa thinks they have a legit shot, they keep after them. They don't typically let recruits just jerk them around tho. If you tell them you are gonna sign in Dec I could see them moving on if you were just holding out for a better offer. As always it will be a case by case thing. Iowa will continue after some and cut ties with others.

More horrible than a kid calling up an ISU or Minnesota to commit and the coaches won't even take your calls?

As always fans of schools will probably defend the indefensible. Pretty par for the course really.
