I still have a problem with Kirk

I watched the Hawkeye media day coverage last night on the news. I tried to follow what Jon and most of the other Hawk fans say: there was no cover up by Kirk, he did all he could when he kicked the players off, he used bad judgment sending the players back to the room and finally I have had a relationship with Kirk for 9 years and he is a good guy. I tried really hard to consider Kirk that way but the problem is that I also have a 9 year relationship with Kirk and tend to view things a little differently. I think if you look at his time at Iowa 2 things stick out. One of them would be the terrific success he had from 2002-2004. I would love to see Chizik go a run like that. The other thing I see is 9 years of continual poor judgment and lack of discipline.

Over the last 9 years, it is very easy to walk through case by case where Kirk’s judgment and discipline are questionable. Dana Brown kicked off the team but only after this 3rd arrest, Sam Aiello beating up the QB and nothing happening. There are obviously more. The coaching of Drew Tate reeks of no discipline and poor judgment. The housing scandal was recently discussed on this board and there clearly was some poor judgment and discipline by Kirk not only as a coach but as a parent. Even with the rape case, Kirk showed poor judgment more than once and did not discipline Jevon Pugh. Meeting with the victim initially and then being part of the group that recommended an informal process shows no wisdom on his part. Sounds like from reading the reports after the victim was taken to the room Pugh touched the victim. He was not disciplined at all and fact scored the winning touchdown against Michigan State. Certainly with his handling of the rape case, Kirk’s judgment and discipline should be questioned more that what it is.

When it comes right down to it, I have 2 problems with Kirk and the way Jon and other Hawks look at him.

1.) It seems to me that discipline and wisdom are 2 very big pillars in making up someone’s character. How can Kirk still be considered a man of such great integrity and character when he has displayed repeated lack of discipline and judgment in his 9 years at Iowa? I think what is scary is that he has gotten worse over time and not better. His judgment as to who he offers scholarships to has declined greatly. I guess his discipline has not gotten worse. It has never existed.

2.) Should a man with a history of judgment and discipline problems be allowed to be in charge of 100, 18-23 year old young men who by default struggle with discipline and making the right choices? It seems like the team is simply going to follow their leader. It took Kirk 9 years to get a life skills coach and Chizik one year. I do not see much leadership in Kirk.

Unfortunately, I think Kirk will win 8-9 games this year and all will be forgiven and forgotten. I am not trying to paint Kirk as a complete scumbag but if you look at the evidence over 9 years you have to come to the conclusion that he has some issues. I would be fine if Jon and the other Hawks said, “He know Kirk has some character problems but he took us to the greatest success Iowa has ever had. I think he can take us back there so we should keep him around.â€￾ I could accept that because it is truth. The hypocrisy of saying that Kirk is a great guy when the evidence does not support it sickens me.

Most fans have forgiven and forgotten simply by landing recruits Keenan Davis and Jordan Cotton. Most of them dont have attention spans longer than 15 seconds.

I thought it was interesting that SHPE said that the media knows more of whats going on with his recruits than he does. Just thought that was interesting

Thats just his typical smart ***/sarcastic way of saying he cant talk about it.

Anyone else see or hear media interviews when he made all those stupid noises from the back of his throat everytime he answered a stupid question. Jon Miller even talked about it and said he does it on purpose.

Just win baby! We can justify what we need as long we can get our adrenaline fix.

It is interesting how quickly the media has been willing to exonerate KF in spite of the fact that he's the one that had the most to gain by sweeping this under the table. Last I checked these were his players and he's the one that is accountable for his players, and if I remember correctly he's the one that needs to protect a $3 million dollar pay check.

Dont forget how he threw a childish fit when the state planned to build a highway close to his estate.

You're right, nobody had a bigger motive to cover all this stuff up the the state's highest paid employee himself.

Three million dollars can make a person make several shady decisions - nature of the business.

Gene and crew is straight forward as to what to expect.

JP is a true motivator.

The KFc and Barta Travelling roadshow are an act of a different color. Theuy just approach things from a different perspective. They get a bigger table or rug...

Could not agree more...

Also, it would be hard for Jon Miller to give a clear/honest opinion since his work is directly related to the access he has with the Uof I athletic department.

Yep. That is why I don't listen to a certain radio show or radio station anymore. Never again. When the flagship Cyclone station is carrying all the water for the University of Iowa I gotta draw the line. I listen to the games on FM from now on.

Kirk lost me with the housing issue. I'm sure he doesn't care. He doesn't care about much else...unless somebody catches him on it.

Good luck with that.

You are going to get as much of an un-biased opinion from Jon as you are going to get from me or any other Cyclone fan on the issue. See, the thing is I realize I am biased. There are many other people who can't seem to beleive that they possibly could be.

Bias or not, EIU is a cesspool. Jon can't say that because you simply can't **** where you eat.

I have no problem with KF. He is out there covering his butt any way he can. he has never, ever been the great, honest, straight shooter that the media has been selling us and that is the problem I have with the whole situation. If anything happens at ISU the media has it covered from every angle. If it happens at Iowa it is just brushed away as "gosh, boys will be boys, KF can't be responsible for any of this, after all, he is a great guy. I read in the paper."

I didn't hear about that. Was it anything like the childish fit he threw when a member of the media he evidently owns, questioned about his low-life freeloading kid when he stole welfare housing from the needy?

Yes you can. Eiu football players do it all the time.

Well if you ask any Iowa fan, those two are apparently the best thing since sliced bread. They thought Barrent was the next best thing, but since he changed his committment, everyone thinks he is garbage and that Iowa can do better. Iowa fans just make me laugh by there thought process.

Yeah, but after it happens 4 or 5 times, they're asked to leave.

I know a guy that lost his job because of Kirk Ferentz, the Gables, and other rich people on the north side of town because they didn't want a road built that may bring other townies closer to their estates. They spent lots of money and resources to make sure that certain people at the county would sway their way.
