Sarcasm? Georgetown has a MUCH better program than New Mexico and a bigger tradition. Even though Georgetown has struggled the past few seasons, they're still much more attractive of a place for a coach than New Mexico.

Yep, add in being in the Big East, brand new facility, DC recruiting bas, tradition and rumored to be willing to pay 4 million per it is a attractive job. Georgetown will get a premium coach and I wouldn't be surprised if it is someone currently employed by a top program.

Sometimes coaches that coach at a school like Indiana want to go chill at a school for a few years and take less pressure. So New Mexico is a good school to do that type of thing. Then maybe wait for a better off than Georgetown.

Do you actually know of any coaches that this applies to? Ones that had better offers but decided to take the worse offer for less pressure?

New Mexico is actually a very underrated job, they get a ton of support, obviously the MWC isn't a p5 but NM is like p4.5. One of the better non p5 jobs for sure but G'town is a a big time job. Their struggles lately mean they'll likely through a ton of cash around. The only negative about G'town would be the pressure thats going to come with the big paycheck and facility upgrades. I honestly think they'll try to aim higher than Crean. With his recruiting ties in the DC/VA area, I wonder is Shaka Smart is on their radar? Certainly sounds like they could swing it financially.

No sarcasm intended at all. Not sure why you took it as such. Georgetown would have an environment much more to Crean's liking- basketball tradition, academics, and it's a Jesuit school.

I doubt it.

The only ones that come to mind are coaches that skipped town to avoid getting fired, e.g. Tubby leaving Kentucky for Minnesota. Or McDermott to Creighton.

I don't know Crean, but he seems, um, special, even my coaching standards, and my guess is he takes what he perceives to be the best fit.

Prior to Indiana, Crean coached at Marquette, a Jesuit school in a large metro area with strong bball tradition, just like Georgetown. He was very successful there, it would stand to reason that he'd prefer that job over the NM job. I think that was his point, no sarcasm.

Shaka would not leave Texas for Georgetown. Have you seen the facilities that Texas has? No way he leaves.

Tim Floyd, Steve Alford left Iowa for a worse lower profile job. So yeah coaches will take a lower level school just to get away from the nonsense for a while

Not sure if you're being serious but Tim Floyd left for the Chicago Bulls and Steve Alford probably would've been fired amid all the Pierre Pierce stuff so he got out while he still could.

I'm assuming this refers to Floyds time at USC. I would argue that both of these guys split town before the hammer came down and took the best available job. Don't think a lower-profile gig was by choice.

Yeah, I disagree. Those guys were beating the posse out of town. Not choosing a worse program instead of a better program.

I wanted to know if you knew of anyone without a current job being offered 2 jobs and taking the worse job?

As this is apparently the coaching carousel thread, I wonder if Scott Drew would get a look for the Georgetown job. There was some chatter that maybe he would be open to leaving Baylor, like Georgetown has a history of producing good big men, etc.

Martin, Underwood, Marhsall, Dixon, etc. many guys sacrifice "better jobs" for something else.

Why? That gives us 5 guys in that class and 3 Gs if it's that guy.

Why are we so worried about this 3 years in advance? Just get the best guys in here that we can. A lot can change in those 3 years to make the classes even out again.
