So we're the Mendoza Line for recruiting?

My first instinct would be to be pissed, but when you look at it superficially it would be relatively accurate. What the columnist is failing to take into account is that historically this and last year are aberrations for ISU and the Gopher team would be above his "Mendoza line" in pretty much any other year.

If ISU continues to recruit, land players and improve their actual performance on the field there may be a cycle that results in Reusse having to find another Mendoza bellcow before his retirement.

Besides, I can't entirely hate him. He hit the nail on the head in this column...

Not really any different than Random Radio Doosh saying things like, "They even lost to Iowa State for crying out loud" or who "Who would ever want to go to Ames, Iowa?" when the context of their conversation has nothing to do with us. For whatever reason our only real legacy in the college sports world is that of baseline awfulness.

I can't confirm it but I feel like it's appropriate to blame Walden and Criner.

But, also, **** that guy.

The guy's a jackass and there's no reason to bring ISU into it. Honestly, it doesn't make sense to criticize a recruiting class when the coach just got hired a month ago anyway.

If he was clever he would have called it the McCarney line. Not that I have anything against McCarney, just would have been more clever.

FYI I know what the Mendoza line actually is.

Fleck needs to be careful. He is setting himself Minnesota up to be the new Mendoza line.

This is the real problem with the column. The guy is in the job this short of time and you slam him because his class is largely players they were recruiting at his previous job. Practically anyone of value was already committed elsewhere. Are you really going to sway someone to come in a month without ever having recruited them?

This guy from the comments section gets it.

I wonder what Patrick would write about Fleck's polar opposite, Paul Chryst, who can make a 10-ounce microphone feel like a 10-pound anvil to any interviewer, whose wardrobe consists largely of "Squirrel Division Champion" sweatshirts, and who has gratefully inherited Barry Alvarez's system of combing their home state for offensive linemen like Ryan Ramczyk to blast holes for the Badgers' latest running back from New Jersey. Alvarez tried to compete with the football blue bloods for top recruits after winning back-to-back Rose Bowls and three in six years, and he failed miserably. Can Fleck do it? I doubt it. But he can make it interesting against his Big Ten West rivals. Let's count our blessings that we have two divisions in the Big Ten and aren't bucking state rivals for recruits, as Matt Campbell is at Iowa State (#WinNow).

Pat Reusse is a good Twins beat writer. Other than that he's a big 10 homer from Fulda Minnesota who still wishes he was rooting for the 1960 Gopher football team.
