Naz over Thomas? Sure, I guess, but it could be different next game. They're a bit redundant together, but we'll have a lot of guard minutes.

We don't really have anyone that is a must-have on the floor every game imo. Maybe Morris, but some of our best ball of the year was with him in the bench against Miami. Prohm has the challenge of really needing to find the hot hands, not only individually but as a group.

We need a version of Huggyball due to having many moderately talented guys but no go-to players or mismatches. With only two posts and 7+ guards/wings, I hope we try a more fullcourt, uptempo, hectic style.

Naz and Monte will try to get the ball to the basket when the outside shot isn't falling. Babb has shown a little of it. Burton should be that guy, and when he is he is a beast, but it's like you say that you don't know what he'll do from game to game.

Some just don't seem to get it. It's not about not giving effort. This is a very talented team with a big, important, critical weakness (right now). Until someone steps up to be an inside presence on both ends, playing hard isn't often going to be enough. They have to play inspired.

35-25 at half offense was stagnant, it's obvious when we work the ball our shot % goes up dramatically. I'd attribute that to effort.

Defense absolutely needs to improve and that's always about effort.

2000 was a special team that lacked height but they had the ability to shut you down.
All about effort!

The whole team seams hot and cold this year. Not sure any are immune. I was glad to see Prohm stick with the hot hands rather than return to starters. Feels like the way this year will go, spending the first half trying to find the hot hands and second half playing catch up.

Georges could always score against anyone...so could Royce...not sure we have that anymore...thought Deonte could be the one but he has proven that theory wrong.

Nor anyone else. Kind lacking that type of player. I see where we hoped Burton could have been, but he is as inconsistent as the others.

2000 had great effort, yes, but it's hard to say it's all about effort when that team also had two All-Americans. They had a guy in Fizer that was bigger/stronger than almost anyone he faced. Horton was a big mauler as a guard and Tinsley was not only big, but innately crafty as a defender. Nurse wasn't that small of shooting guard, and was quick. He also was an outlier in terms of toughness, having played a day after getting hit by a car. The whole small narrative is based on Stevie Johnson, who also happened to be an elite athlete that played LB for the football team the following year. Burton's athletic but he's no Johnson imo. This also ignores the fact we had two 6'10" guys coming off the bench if size was hurting us.

People still ragging on Tech..weird. I'll type it again: they're an NCAA tourney team with lots of returners.

That said, it looked bad for 30 minutes.

Imo Young and Weiller all the difference and if they're not starting/playing more Prohm is playing politics.

Shot out to Jackson too as he's at least active without the ball.

I didn't think Tech looked very good yesterday and they certainly did nothing in the non conference to prove they are a good team. They played one top 100 kenpom team, number 97 Auburn, and lost and had narrow wins over the only other two top 150 teams they played.

They are a bad passing team, how many unforced turnovers did they have yesterday? They did a good job of rebounding and being patient on offense in the first half, but once we started getting after them on defense we saw how poor their offense was.

Things look like they add up as follows.
  • We don't have a single dominant player to lean on
  • Naz may come and go with his 3 shot, but needs to be ready to drive the paint on the off days
  • I keep wondering if Matt shoots the 3 pointer much better from the guard spot than the small forward
  • Monte does much better distributing the ball than trying to be the dominant scorer
  • We will be running a 4 guard line up about half the minutes depending on match ups and who is playing well
  • Burton will have the same up and down days, just like the others
  • Who finishes the game will become more important than who starts
  • A lot of the early woes are partially due to much experimentation with longer term goals than winning non con games.

I really want to see Young play more. I want to continue to see Jackson and Babb's minutes climb as well.

I don't see any drop off when those guys are in, and possibly improvement. So we may as well prepare for the future while putting our best effort forward this year.

At least 10 unforced turnovers. If I were a Tech fan, I would believe that my team literally threw the game away.

I thought Tech looked fairly crisp for a lot of the game, and moved the ball around/had more movement on offense than ISU.

And certainly more athletic overall than ISU. They looked frazzled the last few minutes when ISU got some things figured out.

Hopefully ISU gets their rhythm and gets it figured out that ball movement helps get open high percentage shots. Conference play is going to be really tough with TCU hanging with KU, and most teams being generally more athletically capable than ISU.

Informally it looks like he's better at scoring while he's being a distributer as well. No shot chart available but I've said it before--Morris is most effective when you hardly notice what he's doing.

He seemed to struggle pretty mightily often against tall athletic bigs like Baylor always seemed to have.

Horton was 6'1" & Nurse was slightly built but both were in your face on D.
Tinsley made everyone better on O.
Morris just doesn't make mistakes, both are/were great just different.
Our wings were snipers but Tinsley's ball handling led to open threes.
This year's version needs to move the rock

Johnson was Ejim w/o the range, neither needed to be the focus to score.
If Burton can fill this role he's a plus, currently he's more of a hindrance.

in the end ISU may never have another Fizer but 2001 still won the regular season with only serviceable post play.

As for Shirley and Rancik one or the other was usually hurt and

There is no comparison to this year and 2000 was a good defensive team due to far more than effort. The were physical
