Iowa Basketball Recruiting

Finally, why does this board hate in state players like Bohannen so much? Honestly, I love to see those guys do well no matter where they go. ISU, UNI, Creighton, I always cheer for them. Weird. Good day and good luck this year.
Being an out of state, Iowa State Fan, I have never had the connection to keeping in-state players in state. I just calls em as I sees em. It has nothing to do with what school they go to. If an Iowa fan is claiming Bohannan is a solid point guard, I am calling ********, and it has nothing to do with him being on Iowa or that I "hate him so much", I just do not believe he is a good player. If an Iowa State fan were to call, say Wes Greder, a solid guard option and asking for him to play, I would most certainly call them out on their outlandish comment.

I wish success for all Iowa-born basketball players, but it doesn't mean that all of them are good.

I'll just trust kenpom, sagarin, and the ap poll which at least put them in the bubble convo.

I think Seton Hall is most-definitely garbage this year. Isaiah Whitehead was all they had last year. Whenever I watched them, it was either he was rolling and so were they, or it was stagnant and hard to watch. You think Madison Jones is going to pick up that production with his, 4.7 career ppg average? No. They're probably a 5 or 6th seed in the Big East, that is not good enough to make a tourney as an At-Large. Tell me how they will beat out Georgetown, Villanova, Xavier, Creighton (even Marquette and St. John' will probably be at their level) Providence is depleted with Bentil and Dunn gone. But there is no way Seton Hall should be thought of as a Tourney team, and beating an Iowa Hawkeye team is not a reason to think any differently.

Well considering Georgetown just lost to Arkansas St and was 15-18 last year, that doesn't seem like such a tall task. Whitehead shot 37% from the field last year, that's a lot of volume scoring. I think Seton Hall will be a bubble team fighting for third with Butler, Creighton, and Marquette.

I didn't watch Iowa's game last night so I have nothing to add other than to say that I think G-town got beat by Arky State last night. I don't know if their problem is talent or something else but they must not be playing very good ball right now.

You're right about Georgetown, I was just naming the big names I could think of in the Big East. Georgetown always under-achieves.

As far as your thoughts on Seton Hall...

"Justify" as in pointing out exactly how many minutes they played? Iowa played 8 man rotations the last couple years, I have no problem with that. Also, I get Baer doesn't look the part, but he can play.
How exactly do you define rotation? They had 10 guys play 9+ each of the last 2 seasons.

I don't hate them, I just get sick of being told that we need to recruit every one of them by Iowa fans.

Most of them should go to uni. We recruit the good ones. Iowa recruits a lot of the ones that should go to uni and then tells us we are doing it wrong.
I don't come here often, bored at work. Iowa fans tell you that you should recruit every one of them? Iowa has only recruited 5 Iowa guys the last 5 years total, so that seems weird. Woodbury and Jok were both worth recruiting, and yes I know you guys hate Woodbury, but damn our post defense looked terrible without him last night. Pemsl will be a good player, but I'm not sold on Bohannon or Kreiner yet. However, it's 3 games into their careers. When Kriener has seen the floor, he has been a good rebounder. He's 6-9, 250 and can run. Our lack of PG's this year, coupled with missing out on all our other PG recruits, led to the offer to Bohannen. Can't argue as to his recruiting stock, and you wonder if he's just a place holder until Fran's boy get's there. So who in your mind did Iowa recruit that should have gone to UNI besides Bohannen. As far as UNI, I would have taken Tuttle and Morgan for sure. Sadly, as an Iowa fan, saying they should have/should go to UNI, isn't exactly a knock right now. :)

don't sell your own fans short, there were plenty of Hawks who hated him too.

He was a pretty big bust, considering the hype he had when he signed. I think he's still the highest rated recruit that Fran has ever signed, but never played anywhere close to his billing. I don't think a lot of hawk fans see Woody as an overall success story.

Pretty sure Hawk fans were here fretting that Woody would be a one and done.:D Glad they were wrong.

Confused by thread now, are Monte and Gazelle pretty much a wash or Monte and JorBo pretty much a wash?

Monte = JorBo = Gessell. I think it's the transitive property (this is more your area) that states this quite clearly.

Also, Baer = Niang. (Nobody thinks this but it's fun to pretend somebody does)

But why is the backside of the rotation even seeing minutes? That's the point that I'm making. Just for the record but Iowa played a 10 man rotation not 8. Later in the season Fran may have tightened up his rotation but 10 guys were consistently seeing minutes. Most Hawkeye fans I know have issues with how Fran rotates his guys in and out. Hell, there have been times where Fran literally forgot that Uthoff and White were sitting on the bench because he was up to his elbows in depth!

Link? Kenpom has Iowa and Iowa State ranked ~50 an so ~70 in defensive efficiency. 2 points per 100 possessions isn't hardly a "light years" difference.

Defensive rating for each rotational player on both teams

Iowa
1. Jones 88.2
2. Pemsl 92.2
3. Baer 94.6
4. Williams 95.2
5. Wagner 96.0
6. Moss 96.3
7. Jok 98.4
8. Uhl 100.4
9. Cook 103.5
10. Bohannon 104.6
11. Ellingson 106.0

Iowa State
1. Burton 59.6
2. Young 67.2
3. Naz 69.0
4. Bowie 70.6
5. Babb 77.2
6. Monte 77.8
7. Thomas 79.1
8. Holden 83.3
9. Jackson 86.1

So when I say light years better I mean that our worst defender has a better defense rating than your best defender

I love these stats but, really, have no idea what they mean or how they went about computing them. I don't care. I still love them.

Also, after the way his man defense started last year, who would have ever thought that Burton would ever be listed as our best defender.
