Am I the Only One?

Am I the only one that has seen improvement since Lanning became the starting quarterback and Mangino was let go? I see improvement on both sides of the ball. We have the first 1,000 yard rusher since ARob. We have a mobile quarterback that rushed for over 100 yards last game. We held the 8th ranked team in the nation to 34 points, and oh did I forget, we led the game except for the last 5 minutes. All I see are people bad mouthing a coaching staff that is trying to get things going in a positive direction. I see people bad mouthing our players and saying they are not good enough to get wins. This is Iowa State, we are not Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, or even this year (I hate to say it) Iowa. We are a work in progress and I am satisfied that things are moving in the right direction. If we pick up a few good JUCO players to fill a few holes for next year, we have a good core of returning players that can win.

I feel like I have said that every offseason for years. Maybe I was drinking the koolaid, but last year, this was what we were saying about this team: "Best WR corps we've had in years! Sammie's a senior, he's going to kill it! Our defense will be much better than last year!"

Even when we stumbled into a great running back (which was a glaring weakness heading into the season), we still stumbled out of the gate to a 1-2 start. We should be much better next year, but that's what we said last year, and it didn't pan out this year.

We are playing better but I still don't trust this coaching staff. I'll believe that we have an improved team next year when I see it. I'm not getting burned by the hype again.

I refuse to let you pee on my parade. Sick of hearing all of you that cannot look on the bright side of our program. Too many here look at the glass as half-empty, not half-full.

I see improvement this year compared to last year, we are extremely close in a lot of the games. I would say only Oklahoma and Tech were blow outs, the others we were within reach.
but you are correct, we are playing much better since mangino has left. We are moving the ball which gives the defense a rest!

It does feel as if we have a better team since then.

Now to pick up a couple of Ws to finish out the year. If we loose out, then the improvement clearly isn't enough and just doesn't matter. Gotta get some more Ws!

I don't know. I don't think we are all that much better since any of the changes with the exception of being willing to use Lanning in the running game. There are a lot of things that still bother me and number one is that we don't have a designed power package with Lanning as the ball carrier. It makes zero sense to me.

I have noticed a difference since Mangino was let go. Doesn't mean it's all sunshine and rainbows, but up until the last 3 minutes of the OSU game I was all for giving CPR another year based on those changes. Those last 3 minutes, though. IDK...

Yes. We have improved. The people calling for CPR's head are the same people that would have fired Kirk Ferentz after the Bowl Loss.

I'd like to give Rhoads one shot with Lanning for a full season. I like to see a few changes in our defensive scheme. But I think the talent is there. Warren is going to a huge help in the process of Lanning as well. He takes some of the pressure off. He could run for 1500-1750 next year if we use him right (mangino didn't).

There are a few issues here...the biggest one is something that the AD refuses to remedy.

And the coaches are allowing the QB to run.
Sam was a scrambler, but not good on read option and was accurate on short throws. MM kept Sam from scrambling this year, wanted him in the pocket, which was painfully obvious. In past years, Sam would scramble when a pass broke down and kept the chains moving.
Lanning is almost as good a scrambler as Sam and is much better on read option (more like Tebow), is not as accurate as Sam on short to medium throws, and both QB's struggled to throw the deep ball accurately.

MM being let go allowed the QB to be a run threat again. If Lanning can improve his footwork and accuracy, he is going to be Really dangerous, IMO.

We do have an improved team this year though, have you not been watching? We also play 5 top 15 teams.

There is a lot of room for hope with the way the players are developing and how the team is improving as the year goes on. The main problem is that there has been hope every year, but the results just aren't matching up. That can only go on so long.

This. Do I see improvement, yes. Have I got my hopes up countless times with this program only to be upset, yes. At some point a change needs to be made. At some point you need to realize that doing the same thing over and over again, and getting the same results, is insanity.

Unfortunately, no, you aren't the only one.

Honestly, is it that you guys were so jazzed up about Lanning being the savior, that it's hard to admit not much has changed? ISU still finds ways to go an entire half of football without hardly moving the ball.

I do see potential there, don't get me wrong, but history of QBs under Rhoads also says that with Lanning, what we see now is what we get. If there is one thing besides losing that's consistent with this staff, it's their inability to develop a QB.
