If they didn't have to carry Lester's personal catcher, my opinion is the Cubs would be better off just keeping Montero and still moving Schwarber to C if can play there defensively. You won't get much for Montero in a trade because he isn't worth much more than $14 million, and a lot of the teams that can take on payroll are set at C. You could play Montero at C every 3 or 4 days to keep Schwarber fresh while trying to hide Schwarber in the OF with a pitcher like Arrieta on the mound.
The Rangers or Padres may be trade partners for Montero, though. I'd maybe try to trade him to the Rangers with a middling prospect, and get back Leonys Martin. That guy is a stud defensive OF who seems to have fallen a bit out of favor with the Rangers.

That is fine. He doesn't need to play often to be a leader. He can play like Denorfia did this year. 2 automatic outs a the bottom of the order kills any momentum.
It just seems like it's going to take a ton of work to make Schwarber into an everyday catcher and I don't know if it's worth it to make him just a part time catcher. He probably needs everyday reps to develop and the only way to do that would be to send him down to AAA but there's no way his bat will let them do that. The NL Central is going to be tough again next year, can you really afford to let him learn on the job at the MLB level? And he hasn't ever caught Lester or Arrieta and struggled with Strop and Rondon when he did catch them, if the Cubs do go after a big time free agent arm is having a very inexperienced and defensive question mark at catcher going to be a selling point to them? If not, that's already 3/5 of the rotation he won't be catching. Contreras will be added to the 40 man in the offseason and will be in AAA next year, with him that close to the majors, I just don't see how you get Schwarber the reps he needs.
My personal dream offseason moves: Swing a package deal for Danny Salazar and Carlos Carrasco from CLE for a package of Baez, Soler, Vogelbach, Eloy Jimenez and maybe one more (Hanneman / DeWees). Solves the starting pitching problem, plus frees up all the money earmarked for free agency to use towards Fowler and to replace Soler in RF (maybe even Cespedes or Heyward). Probably not realistic (don't think CLE would give up both), but would be a great move IMO.
Indians would do that in a heartbeat. That is all you need to know about that trade.
Soler is signed to a 9 yr 30 mil contract people. There is no way Theo is trading that value away.

Yeah, but he can opt into arbitration when he is eligible (2016 or 2017, I think). It'll only be 9 yr/ $30mil if he flops. If he succeeds, it will be a lot more than $30 million.
Yeah, it would still be cheap relative to his production, but not $4 mil a year cheap.

I don't see the Cards offering him $20+ million for more than 6-7 years. That's just not how they do business. He simply won't get a $15+ million dollar offer for double digit years.
