Recruit Lists v2.0

There aren't enough minutes in the game to let Thomas throw the ball up until he gets hot, that's not how this works. He's started games and shot the ball plenty, and he did poorly. He's gonna have to learn how to score without being a volume 3 shooter.

He was a true freshman when starting and obviously was not ready for that role.....it was Fred who wanted him to be a volume 3 shooter based on his offense. Matt has a nice drive and pull up/floater game I think you will see, as well as probably the best pure shooter in the team....he was why we won at Texas, as well as kept us in it against Baylor and UAB.....

there re is no doubt his problem is mental and he needs to improve on D, but I would bet TJ can get the best out of him.....and all of you Thomas haters will have to find someone else to bash on...

Maybe I am misunderstanding your post, but Thomas was a true sophomore last year.

I'm not hating on Thomas, but he has shot 33% from three over the last two years. Compared to Cooke's 45% from three, which even beats MT's overall fg% of 36%, Cooke seems to be the better sharpshooter based on one year's worth of stats. My point is that MT is going to have some stiff competition in Cooke. This is a good thing people. I like Cooke's game more. But I know that we haven't seen what Matt is truly capable of. I'm really hoping he can turn into the shooter we have seen flashes of. The flashes need to become the standard.

How many times did Matt start last year? The bulk of when he started was when he was a freshman which is what HornacekFan is referring to.

The good thing about having a new coaching staff is that the slate should be clean with all the players. Your play should dictate the minutes you get. I think it is easy to assume that Coach Prohm will coach and handle players similar to Fred, but that may not be the case. Hopefully the players embrace change and they improve as both individuals and as a team.

I don't think he started a game. I was talking about his freshman year, after someone said he started and had plenty of shots ( he was obviously not ready for that role).

And I doubt the majority of us have seen Hallice play enough to talk about his overall game, or make statements based on his one year at OSU. I hope he is a fantastic for here and does push Matt to give us his best.

I agree that Hallice has the potential to be very, very good, and I am hopeful that he is a key player in this year's run. I also think Matt will show great strides this year. There are plenty of minutes for both to be key contributors this year IMO, and even more next year.

Don't discount Babb either at least situationally (if we need a stopper on a dominant guard), arky was high in him. Between cooke and Thomas my guess whoever the hot hand will get the majority of minutes in any particular game which is why having two shooters is nice and gives us a good 6th man option. I could see Jackson starting too if Monte sticks around either way we have options.

I think if J Long comes on board we are done with guards at least till transfer or spring JUCO season.

And to add, whether Monte is back or not is doubtfully the determinate if Cooke or Thomas starts. Assuming Burton and Malou do, Jackson would likely be the point and I don't see us going with only 1 starter over 6'4, not in the Big 12.
How could we possibly only have 1 guy starting over 6'4 in any scenario?
Morris/Jackson
Cooke 6'3/Thomas 6'4
Burton 6'4/Babb/6'5
Malou 6'9/ Young 6'6
Carter 6'8/ Ernst 6'8

The post you quoted was a reply to this:
Monte/Jackson/Burton/Thomas/Malou starting.

Yeah that ain't happening
If Monte plays, we can actually give him a breather and Monte, Jackson, Thomas, Cooke & Burton share the 1-3 minutes and Malou, Carter & Young (Burton when we want to go small) share the 4/5 minutes and throw Malou at the 3 and Burton at the 4 and invert every now and then too.

Those 8 get the majority of minutes. If Monte is gone substitute with X transfer to be named or Babb. I don't see Ernst getting minutes in 16' but would be awesome if he has developed that much by then.

Is there anyway to download Naz (3sus) mind into Matt's head? This would be an unstoppable force. For the good of the team Im sure Naz would go for it.

No. Hallice Cooke was Pac-12 FOTY and definitely will be starting unless Thomas proves himself. So far Thomas hasn't impressed anyone. Hallice is a better scorer, dribbler, passer, defender, and finisher than Thomas right now. I hope MT proves that he's the better one this year because he certainly isn't right meow.

I don't think you realize how good of a ball handler MT is. Easily the 2nd best on the team last year.

I certainly don't hate Matt Thomas. He does a lot of really good things for us. Handles the ball well, good rebounding for a guard, good pull-up mid range game, and an average 3 point shooter. I'll always be rooting for the guy, but I'm done expecting him to be a knockdown shooter.

Okay, that is why I opened with "Maybe I am misunderstanding your post..." I wasn't trying to be a **** and assume you were wrong, hence the opening I provided. It was confusing because in the same paragraph that you call him a true freshman you discuss games from last year when he was a sophomore.

I watched Hallice play quite a bit in his year at OSU as it was my senior year in college and I spent most of my evenings after student teaching back home watching mbb and planning lessons. He looked good as a Freshman. In all honesty, having watched both play that year I thought and still think Cooke looked like the better player in 2013-14. The stats, albeit from an easier league, indicate that Cooke performed better as well in a large way. That said, MT has another year of experience that Cooke missed out on recovering from surgery. Also because of the surgery I am apprehensive. I made the point and stand by it, I think MT will have competition if Cooke is fully recovered and manages to knock the rust off. I am by no means a bb expert or analyst, but I think the key point of the entire discussion comes down to this one question: Can Matt be consistent? If so, then I think he gets more minutes. If not, then I think Cooke does.

Fair enough, that is a good point. I am a big college basketball fan, but admittedly did not watch a lot of PAC 12 games during Hallice's freshman year, and can't recall if I even saw him play....and I bet most of the CF members are the same....But if you did catch some of them, you probably do have a good idea of how he approaches the game and his skillset......Bottom line, we need both guys to be not just solid, but play to their potential the next 2 years if we want to get where we are expected to be in 2016, and keep the momentum somewhat the following year..

WTH I come to potentially see new info on 2016 guys we are in on or anything new on the 2017-18 and all I get is 2 posts about re recruiting. Common guys make a different post for this roster what if, who's better convo
