They make it so easy...

B1G - 1, 5, 17, 28, 32, 39, 45, 56, 64, 72, 78, 84, 86, 87

Big 12 - 2, 3, 18, 31, 40, 41, 42, 75, 100, 114

Even with four more teams, how is the bottom of the B1G that much worse than the bottom of the Big 12? 30% of Big 12 teams are ranked 75th or lower. 29% of the B1G teams are ranked 75th or lower.

70% of the Big 12 is in the top 42 compared to only
43% of the BIG

Wow

Baylor was up 24-14 at half and 41-21 going into the 4th. That doesn't say to me they had no interest in being there. It's actually a pretty lame excuse and tool for deflecting the fact that MSU held one of the most explosive offenses in the nation scoreless in the last 20 minutes and earned a win over one of the best teams in the country that wanted to win just as much.

I know bowl results are easily overblown and not a be all. I'm just saying anyone who thinks the B1G was weak or not just as good if not better than the Big 12 LAST YEAR and last year alone is either blind or dumb or both.

I didn't say that Baylor in particular didn't want to be there, I said they lost interest. They let off the gas and couldn't flip the switch back on when they needed to. It happens. B1g proved they were not as weak as many thought last year. I'm not going to say they were definitively better than the Big 12, but it was at least debatable which is a change from recent years.

This year no one really knows. Preseason rankings are just media hype. I do know that I would LOVE to have Iowas schedule.

Yes the West is weak. But MSU beat Big 12 co-champ Baylor. Wisconsin beat Auburn. OSU won the national title. When the dust settled the B1G was arguably the better football conference than the Big 12 last season.

The Big 12 had a considerable lead in head to head. MSU over Baylor was the only B1G victory against the Big 12.

The Big 12's last place team beat a mid-pack Big 10 team on the road.

They'd still have to beat Ohio State or Michigan State for the Big Ten championship.

Even if they run the regular season table, I don't see that happening.

Their chances go wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy down without that win, depending on how the rest of the season shakes out and on Notre Dame.

I'd rather we go 2-10 than 6-6. If we limp out with another .500 season it won't be enough for Barta or KF to be forced out. We need a complete meltdown with lots of losses and lots of shots of crying kids in Iowa jerseys under cloudy skies.

god help you if .500 against that schedule isn't enough to get him fired.

After our game, I kind of hope they win enough to go a couple over .500 and then win a bowl game. Kirk in IC is the gift that keeps on giving.

in all fairness, there's plenty of looking past UNI and at 4-0 start predictions on this board. And we got curb stomped by our FCS opener.

Link?? I'm sure you can find a couple posts I suppose but I haven't talked to ANYONE expecting a 4-0 start or even expecting a win over UNI until we see it happen. I'd say most of our fan base is in "I'm pumped to go tailgate and look at our pretty upgraded stadium" mode right now.

All it takes is one and it spreads like wildfire, "Clowns fans say……."

The schedule was just as lame last year and we went 7-5, including a 14-51 throat kick from Minnesota. And it's business as usual.

Yeah, and something seems just a tad off on the "Look what the Big did in bowl season" line of reasoning.
I'll think about it some more and get back to you.

Iowa is going to be bad. I would not be surprised to see them lose to ISU two weeks in a row to start the season. Remember how the slimed out to beat an horrible team to start the season last year? Then not only lost to Iowa State on their home field, but somehow got outgained by ISU by 100 yards. Still think that they will win 6-7 games, because the Big10 West is just really bad and they get to play all the worst teams in the East.

Wow

Taking only the top 42 kind of demonstrates a desire to cherry pick the stats. Even if you take it to an even top 50 the Big 12 had 70% of their league in while the Big 10 only had 50% of their league. That leaves a lot of teams outside of the top 50 for top half Big 10 teams to pick up wins against - and that is before you consider the one additional patsy OOC game the Big 10 teams are able to play with only an 8 game conference schedule. That 8 game schedule means those teams can pick up one more cheap win while lessening the chances of injuries as starters rest on the sidelines for most of the second half.

Sure bowl results matter...although they're easily overblown. You know the whole who wants to be there thing. Baylor lost interest and got smacked. Just like the year prior when OU drilled Bama. OU was not the better team, they just wanted to be there and Bama was disappointed to be playing in that game.

Id just be careful about drawing major conclusions from the bowls...but especially when it pertains to the following year. OU rode that win over Bama to a high preseason ranking. And we all know how that turned out for them.

Oh dont start that crap. That is one of the worst excuses for losing a game- them "not wanting to be there". How in the world would you, or any of us, know? Just because Saban hinted at it once, doesnt mean every bowl team playing a lesser doenst want to be there if they lost. Baylor sure seemed like they wanted to be there until the 4th quarter.

Ill agree with you on avoiding sweep generalizations about a team based on a bowl game. Hell, most of these games are played a month, at least, after their last game. A lot can change.

My take, yeah, we have a shot at the West title. Why? The schedule. I mean, good freakin god is that an easy schedule. Unless Wisc, Minn and/or Nebby play well, theres a chance we wont play one ranked team all year! Thats insane. Having said that, until Ferentz proves me wrong (which is hilarious, as he is in his 17th season), im putting us down as a 7, maybe 8 win team with losses against Minn, Nebraska, Wisconsin and someone we shouldnt lose to, or shouldnt be "expected to lose to". Either ISU team wouldnt surprise me.

Definitely see what you are saying. The only thing Im taking comfort in is A. We have a QB who isnt afraid try for the big play and push the ball. Granted, he will make mistakes and throw pics, but so many of our losses last year would have been different if our QB would have just tried longer throws more consistently. And Im not talking 50 yard bombs, im talking the 10, 15 yarders that keep the chains moving, and keeps the D honest. And B. Ferentz is getting into the gray area of coaching for his job. In the past, 7 wins were acceptable bc he would do it "the right way" (which is a bit bs IMO). Now though, people (we) are tired of it. New staff, beautiful new facilites, constantly asking us for money... time to put up or shut up. So I think Ferentz coaches with his back against the wall, and has a new fire in him. Now, its KIrk Ferentz, so will it happen? Who in the hell knows, but I do know this, one more 7 win season with this joke of a schedule, and it might be lights out for him. It would be really sad to see it go down like that, but we are out of excuses.

Doesn't your fan base use this excuse often?
