*** COACHING SEARCH THREAD: Friday, June 5 ***

I just realized no one is really making the comparison between this hiring and the hiring following Johnny Orr and instead are comparing it to Wayne Morgan. I think the comparison between Jim Hallihan and TJ are a bit closer. I don't recall Hallihans recruiting but both long time assistants in the program lots of people pushing for them. Continuity ect. ect. I also think many people also wanted the big name coach which we got with Tim Floyd. Thought?

We should have hired Jim Hallihan in 1994. The following year Michigan State hired long time assistant Tom Izzo.
Everyone knew those two had been picked to follow Johnny and Jud Heathcote. I'm hoping we finally get it right this time.

Agree. Its June and there's probably coaches out there that don't know or feel about Iowa State the way we do. Its definitely not an easy place to recruit to, no hot-bed of high school talent, and let's face it, not everyone is drawn to the midwest. At least none of the four are trying to get out of a bad situation, they all have great jobs that they're willing to leave to come here. Would imagine that desire could show up in an interview as to who embraces it the most. Shoot, I want the best of both worlds...I want TJ to stay and be the best darn recruiter/associate coach ever AND get an experienced up-and-comer that would sustain the success of this program. Added bonus that they would work well together,be great friends, and of course play the exciting brand of basketball we're used to, as opponenets "Fear the Magic". Is my fantasy over yet??

Good post, particularly the point about Iowa not being a great source of local high school talent. And Fred's success had a lot to do with transfers, and he did an amazing job of both finding them and making it work with them, even when some had troubles elsewhere. There are very few coaches who could pull that off, and other coaches recognize that. My biggest regret is that if Fred had been here another couple of years, perhaps even one more year, we might have increased our high school recruiting profile to the point where we could recruit at a higher level on a sustainable, long term basis. Hopefully we'll hire someone who can have a great year in his first season and be able to reach that goal anyway, but honestly I think it's going to be very, very difficult for anyone but a "marquee name" at the helm, and I'm afraid we're going to take a step or two backward--and that only speaks to what a phenomenal job Fred did here.

I keep hitting F5. What am I doing wrong?

Former Drake coach, Phelps, left Marquette for Arizona. Coaching dominos will be falling late this year. We may be looking for an assistant or two our selves.

Rick Stansbury, former Miss St HC. Retired and got back into coaching at A&M as an assistant. Think he would be a good hire but haven't heard his name mentioned yet.

as an asst. you mean right? Not that I want him back anymore but TF's record at UTEP wasn't as bad as I thought it was...

He did have a lot success at MSU, all time wins leader and some SEC titles, but the more I read on him he seems like a sleazy recruiter. Just thought he was a interesting name that hasn't been talked about. He's definitely more accomplished than the guys we are interviewing.

I fully expect this weekend to be crazy with rumors/news... the last 48 hours have been really quiet.

Wasn't the speculation that most of the interviews were happening this weekend? I think that was posted by Katz. We need a flight tracker to see where Pollard is conducting these interviews, although I'd suspect they're in a big enough city to avoid knowing who's involved.

Me too. I expect the rumors to be flying fast and furious.

That is the hardest part of having JP as the AD... he does a fantastic job overall IMO but when it comes to coaching searches he takes the process way underground and information becomes very scarce as to what is going on. That unknown is the primary source of everyone (including myself) losing their minds over the #Hoibergwatch2015/#Coachpocalypse2015.

Please God let this all be done by Monday or Tuesday!!!

People are reporting it's going down in Atlanta this weekend because that is where the search firm is located. Knowing JP they will probably be doing the interviews at a Holiday Inn Express in some random town in Montana. He doesn't like anything being leaked... unless CW maybe wants to swing by and take a leak on JP's dog.

I must admit I only remember the good Rick Stansbury at Miss. State and do not know about the sleazy recruiting part. Would love to have the good Rick in Ames if the sleazy part is not too much baggage.

Don't know if any of the weekend rumors for salary will surface this weekend but for a refresher, Shaka Smart is getting $2.8 million with a $100,000 annual raise until it reaches $3.4. In addition he is eligible for an additional $500,000 each year in performance bonuses, and a few small typical misc. like a car and club memberships. Of course they are Texas we are ISU. I am not crazy about giving any of the names mentioned for interviews anything close to this. Wouldn't be surprised if someone asks to get paid.

The candidates on our list will not be receiving anywhere near that kind of money. If they come from off the list, who knows?

If Jamie Dixon is interested, Iowa State should give him what he wants. I don't mind ISU missing out on a guy because he is simply not interested, but it better not be due to a frugal offer. I am going to assume that 2 million per year is on the table, and a great catch like Dixon can be negotiated up.

Jamie Dixon leaving Pitt and the ACC for I-State and the B12. A bit surprise if it does happens I also wonder whether it might be a ploy on his (his agent's) part to extend or improve his current contract.
