VIDEO: Seth Davis on Iowa State's coaching search

Pretty much said what everyone else is thinking. Otz is likely the guy, but pick up the phone and call Hornacek.

I'll be pretty surprised if TJ is hired. He's a lot of people's obvious choice and as CW has said multiple times the obvious hire has never been the hire under JP. I'm hoping this remains the case. You have all kinds of national pundits suggesting to at least reach out to Hornacek. I'm confident JP will do so because I think he knows the backlash that will occur by fans if he doesn't. Doesn't mean he has to hire him but I'm pretty confident he will pick up the phone.

Iowa state is certainly getting time in the spotlight this off season. This is going to be a very talked about coaching move because the coaching carousel has already stopped for the year. Add to that the preseason expectations and you have interesting national story.

I think Otz was the "safe" pick for JP. Players knew him, JP likes him.

Then JH opens his mouth / gets the media and fan base excited. I am assuming the donors want JP to make a look at all the options and want to ensure that we get the best hire, not just the safe pick.

Also, this year ISU will need to fill 7+ scholarships - whoever is the head coach (hopefully that of a top 5 team), will not have a much time to devote to recruiting if they are focusing on Houston. Keeping Otz as the #2 and main focus is recruiting, then bring someone like JH in who has probably a 2-4 year window before heading to something bigger, then let Otz take over a program that is well established.

If Otz takes over now, he will have one good year and if he can't land the recruits - the program is back in the dumpster.

Ugh! Just more local media pushing TJ on us!

I don't get why all of these super well-known and connected national media members that know NOTH-ING of CBB keep pumping up TJ, the guy is basically just like me, never been a HC. Heck, I'll coach the team next year for free there wouldn't be any difference between that and TJ running the show. derp. :jimlad:

Which is true of every coach in CBB. I don't get why people continue to doubt TJ's recruiting chops. If there is one area where I wouldn't have any concerns it would be on the recruiting trail. Can you imagine Jameel on the Kane/Ejim team? How awesome would that have been?

Why do people think this? The only people on the squad who have actually played for a team that TJ coached were Long and Niang, and that was only for 1 season. A few other guys KNOW him but have never really worked with him.

You have a hiring situation where perception is going to be more important than reality, not exactly a strong selling point for Otz. Could he be a good head coach? No one could possibly know at this point, but this is not the time to hire an unproven, unknown commodity if you have any intentions on keeping the national credibility that ISU MBB has built up over the last few years.

Hiring Otz is the easy thing to say, but it's not the right thing to do.

I don't think I would watch video of Seth Davis even if Hoiberg offered me his $25 million to do it. Well maybe without sound for $10 million.

I think the point is that TJ has been a great recruiter when he hasn't been called on to be the head coach and the responsibilities that go along with that (film watching, game planning, directing practices, keeping players eligible and out of trouble, press conferences, media teleconferences, etc.). I know Matt A was gone constantly to fulfill the recruiting job.

His job would change dramatically as head coach to the point where his role as recruiter becomes closer, not out there developing relationships, hanging around AAU tournaments all summer, greasing palms. He would no longer be the "recruiter". Whoever is would be selling the "Otzelberger story", not the "Hoiberg story".

I agree with what Leath said and get a name brand guy and I think it should be that as long as they can retain TJ on the staff.

I think retaining TJ would be a challenge if it is anyone other than what would be perceived as a "caretaker" like Hornacek. To be the assistant to a guy that is currently a mid-major coach or an old journeyman that wants to coach another 5 years would be a tough sell to TJ. He wants to be a head coach and turned down HC interview chances to come back here.

Side concern with this is that he is the continuity here. Not that most of our guys have a lot of choices, but players have done stupid things when their guy wasn't hired/retained or whatever. All it would take would be for 1-2 guys to decide to transfer/play in Europe or wherever and the thing could crumble. Next year, IMO, has to be a focus. Have the year we all agree we can have and good things follow.

Uhh regarding your last sentence isn't that case for anyone that is hired? Not a good excuse to not hire TJ. Next.

It's obvious Otz is going to be our next head coach. Hard for me to get excited. I will remain cautiously optimistic.
