Maybe Fred isn't shooting this down because he's a smart man and will likely get another raise if he stays. Recruiting is going slow, but we are already a Top5-10 team reguardless and anyone we bring in will be fighting for minutes.

Recruiting was going to take a hit reguardless because we lost out on our main target, our lead recruiter left, and we don't have the open minutes like previous years.

I suspect CFH would agree with this way of looking at it and understand impact on CycloneNation. Tough choice. Chance to take your shot at becoming an NBA coaching legend or guaranteed status as ISU athletic legend. I don't think that makes him a mere mortal, we find that out 10 years from now when we see how he does in the NBA.

Who is anymore in the NBA? it's not about the coaches there. that's what I don't get about the draw of NBA. Yeah, the money is there but to me the smart ones are Self, Calipari, Coach K, Boeheim, etc. You can cement yourself in a college program and not really have a financial worry. Those coaches will be remembered. Who's the last real good NBA coach to have any cache? Phil Jackson...who else beside him?

The sad thing is I really don't think he is going to enjoy coaching NBA players : already guaranteed huge contracts, huge egos, guys not showing up with effort often ( it is 82 gms), not really teaching ( not much time for real practice), brutal media compared to in Iowa......but he won't know until he does it.......maybe the money will make it worthwhile, I just think he will end up looking back at what he had at ISU...

He was an assistant GM in the NBA, I suspect he would know what he is getting into.

Having players get busted for drunk driving, or having police calling you telling you to deal with a player problem in a fishbowl that is Ames Iowa cannot be lots of fun either. Not to mention the millions of NCAA rules, and the B.S. that goes on in the recruiting world. That is not exactly a picnic either.

I don't even see it as an either/or. He can do both. Come back next year, see if you can take this program to an unprecedented place, and then go to the NBA. I won't fault him if he leaves after next season. If he takes us to a Final Four next season and then rides off to the NBA, he has solidified his legend status.
It's better for the Bulls and for ISU if this coaching change doesn't occur for another year.

That, that alone is something I wouldn't begrudge him for saying F it, I'm out. Screw the NCAA and the Big 12 BS.

What will really be bad for us Cyclones will be if he returns to another school after the NBA.

True, but he hadn't coached before ISU, and being an assistant GM in Minnesoata is quite different than being the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, and coaching 90 gms plus when you figure pre season....add into that the fishbowl national media Chicago operates in, and the guys on that team, and I standby my thoughts....

He'll have to, no way he won't be canned by them within 5 years. You can make the playoffs and still get canned. Heck, Thibs was getting canned if he made the Finals.

Notwithstanding the fact Lon has been to a Final Four, those two only make about 400,000 to 500,000 more per year than Hoiberg. Yet Mayor has a 675,000 max bonus where Ford has zero.

Also, ISU probably got a discount on Mayor because of the low NBA buyout. Again this is evidence that money is not the issue; rather it is the desire to coach in NBA

So instead of making an offer of 2.8 million to CFH we should just expect him to come back and get paid at a below average rate in the Big 12 conference. At some point Pollard is going to have to answer for his decisions. Chizek, Rhoads, McDermott and the potential hiring of a kid with no head coaching experience to take over a Top 10 squad.

It is a complete joke that we have been hearing how important chemistry is with the potential transfer players but nobody is concerned about the chemistry of the coaching staff. You hire a person with no experience to lead people that are frankly just as qualified. Honestly this season has the potential to ruin what Fred had built over the last 4 years given that 2016-17 appears to be shaping up to be like it was under McDermott.

Gregg Popovich could demand any amount he wants from any NBA team.

Doesnt really look like Thibs is being canned...more likely "traded", which is still odd to say , and coming away with potentially twice the salary

I think the Vaughn thing last year was a big kick in his fella's.. That was a done deal by all accounts and then something dirty goes down and we lose him.

He also played in the league for 10 years and knows what players are like. I agree, he's not going to be surprised by what he's getting into.

People think Thibs is an *******, and that doesn't work so well in today's NBA.

Nah, I don't see it. Every time he gets fired, he'll have 3 more nba teams waiting to hire him.

Since he doesn't have an extensive track record, if he's not successful fairly quick I could see Hoiberg getting shuttled into the Offensive-assistant role. That's pretty much what Gentry is now, right? If Monty Williams just got canned for not having good enough defense...

Yeah, that's a very good point. On the flip side he could ring up Vaughn back in March and be like "told you so". He could also use it as recruiting leverage.
