Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

The idea that Fred Hoiberg owes the fans or J.P. another year or even another five is insane. However, when you start talking about what Fred owes Monte, Jameel, Naz, Matt and Georges....well I think that is a much better argument. You will always have attachment to players as a coach but the Niang/Hoiberg relationship seems like one that would be incredibly difficult to end prematurely.

It's all good

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

IIRC, his contract is significantly backloaded. I think the man is worth more than what he's getting paid currently. It's sort of irrelevant if his contract has him well paid (relative to 2014 when it was signed) in 2020.

By then, the going rate for top 15 coaches may be double what we're paying him.

I think it's ridiculous that we aren't paying him more right now.

Fred has a lot of incentives and bonuses in his contract. Those total $675k. The total package would then be worth almost $2.9 million per year if those bonuses are realized. Not too shabby. Remember that Fred is relatively young also. Those at the top of the list have mostly been at their respective schools for quite a while, or have a lot more resources than Iowa State. And putting things in perspective, those at the elite status have at least one or more National Championships to their credit. As much as I love Fred, we have a Sweet Sixteen.

There might be a small raise, but I don't see nothing earth shattering taking place. Maybe accelerating some of the money up front. Perhaps a retention bonus. Maybe some bonus money. But I really do not think that a move by Fred to the NBA is about money.

I love Fred but we only have a single Sweet Sixteen so far and 2 Conference Tournament championships. The potential is there for more. But c'mon. Fred is making more than Roy Williams.
