Can you imagine what 10 big school districts in iowa could do if they shared a facility?

These are the two I've seen which could be considered even close to college level.
Certainly this stadium wouldn't be as big as and FBS school but certainly this stadium seats close to as many people as the UNI dome.
I wasn't aware that several school districts share facilities down there. Makes sense as they can afford nice facilities like this. As long as they don't fall apart before they ever get used that is.
Problem with doing that in Iowa though is that the school districts are so spread out. Where would you put the stadium so that everyone had equal opportunity to use it?
DING DING DING!!!! hate all you want, but Kinnick is built straight up, it's a dump, but the site views are nice.

General question: when did designers stop building seating right over one another but rather above and behind like JTS? does that make sense? Like they could build the 2nd deck right above the first deck. Is it because that would require columns?

You'd either need Wrigley-styled columns or it'd be very expensive to have such a large overhang.
I disagree. The Kinnick stands have no curvature to them, it's all just parallel with the field. I have sat around the 35 yard line about 10 rows up and it is hard to see the corners of the endzones because there is no curvature in the stands.
The stands at Jack Trice curve around so you get a better view of the whole field.
I agree, though, that from a vertical perspective, the higher up in Kinnick you are, you still feel closer to the field than in the upper deck at JT.

BTW the sight lines suck when you have a straight sideline like kinnick. Looks like a high school stadium. Straight bleachers on all sides. It doesn't curve to provide sight lines.
I'll take the jack trice upper deck over that mess any day. Unlike kinnick isu has an upper deck that hangs over the lower deck (closer).

Simplest answer would be cost. In order to have overlap like you describe you either have to have columns in the Lowe seating bowls or much, much heavier framing to support the extended cantilever (it would actually affect the foundations due to the moments that are being induced). The columns are not good for sight lines and the heavier framing makes things expensive.
The only other way I could think of to go vertical would be multiple levels of shallow depth seating which is what a lot of stadiums seem to be doing.
