Leaving my office to go to lunch a few minutes ago, I ran into 3 different Husker fans who aren't renewing their season tickets. Only the fringe Osborn sniffers are behind this hire (or the firing Bo). Being in the heart of Husker country, the next few months will be really entertaining.
Interesting. I think it's not necessarily an upgrade from Pelini, but we will see. The rationale is probably something along the lines of "If he's done that at Oregon State, imagine what he could do with our resources." While Oregon State would fall into the middle of the pack type of schools I think in terms of what they have to offer, they aren't in as a rough shape as many clear "Have Not" programs out there. It's certainly no Iowa State or Wake Forest in that regard.
This is not a splash hire at all to me, and I think Riley has to be giddy about the payday and chance to back up the cash truck as he winds his career down. If he fails and is fired after three seasons while banking $15 million, I'm sure he will just smile all the way to the bank and go looking for a great home someplace warm.

Kind of feels like they flipped two dimes for a quarter. Yeah, one is better than the other but was it really worth the trouble?
I think Nebraska falls further and further into mediocrity. Hope they like 7-5 type seasons because I think they will start seeing a lot of those.

A few thoughts on this....
Maybe I am lacking typical football coach logic, but I think this is a good hire for Nebby. They got rid of Bo because he couldnt beat any top tier teams.....but also he had turned on the fans and supporters. I dont blame them for getting rid of him, from a PR standpoint. Mike Riley is a definite step up in terms of PR for fans, and the community, I believe. Oregon State has a pretty good program, and lots of butts in Reser Stadium every weekend (I live close to Corvallis). Their program right now is pretty stagnant with Oregon obviously dominating the state in terms of big wins and competing for national championships regularly. Sean Mannion is gone this year, and the Beavers will probably struggle this next year or two.

I think they are going to be pleasantly surprised, as the Big 10 and Nebraska football budget is going to be a step up for Mike Riley (Pac 10 > Big 10 competition wise, and bigger $$ I am thinking for budget). Yeah, and the personality and public persona or public relations factor seems to point to wanting a more 'friendly face' to represent them. This is something I find a little odd, because I always kind of liked the coaches who I felt were kind of bada$$, and not necessarily someone who is a super nice guy. Not to say that a nice guy can't succeed, but Pelini really isn't that far off from the persona that some people and players really like. I thought Nebraska was one of the places where a blatant a-hole could exist and thrive even. I suppose that's true as long as he won BIG. I suppose there's a line there between being a confident, bada$$ and a cocky doosh. Pelini has crossed the line into dooshness on several occasions with fans and some of his players, but guys like Ditka certainly had an edge to them. They weren't warm and cuddly. I could see the 'Skers thinking that Pelini won pretty well but he was a class act in public like Tom Osborne. I think it's a push and perhaps even a downgrade. If most of the Sker nation is hacked, them I'm happy. I'd love to see them descend into mediocrity.
Pretty much. I'll think he'll do what Pelini did but with a better public persona.
All the experts seem to mention what a great hire Riley is because he is such a nice guy. I didn't realize that nice coaches always make good coaches.
Hard to say how good of a coach he is, he's never had elite talent. Looks like we're going to find out.
Paul Rhoads wouldn't have a job right now if he wasn't considered a nice guy. Neither would Ferentz.
It's more important than you think. You can act like Saban and keep your job, but people won't tolerate it long if you don't win.

Nebraska isn't going to recruit 5 star players, they haven't for years now. They need a coach who can take the 3/4 star guys and coach them to beat Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan State. Bo couldn't do that. Bo beat teams he was suppose to and that was it.
