7 years multiplied by $750k per year minus a $300k retention bonus due to be paid out on Feb. 15, 2015. So $4.95 million is the net cost of relieving Rhoads of his duties between Dec. 31, 2014 and Feb. 15, 2015.

My question is not if this should happen (there are plenty of other discussion on that which usually devolve into arguing that is not very interesting), but rather is it financially possible for the athletic department?

I have been and am likely always going to be a believer that coaching continuity is the best approach in college athletics. But today is the first time I have wondered if the potential cost in lost revenue next year and potentially beyond from ticket sales etc. would equal the cost of the buyout. Given the recent unprecedented investment in football facilities we are likely more dependent on ticket revenue and donations from football continuing to increase than we have ever been before.

I think I speak for a lot of those on here who give Rhoads until the end of 2015. If this programs flops for the 3rd year in a row then I'll be ready to get the pitch forks and torches and storm the castle.

Wasn't our "fire the coach fund" untouched with the resignations of McDermott and Chizik? Now's when that might help.

Thanks for posting this. That is not as much as I figured a buyout of Rhoads would be.

I would think that is doable, isn't it? Problem is, you also probably have to buyout all the assistant coaches as well, correct? Unless we're promoting someone from within, like Mangino. Although, I don't think Mangino is the answer either.

Our next great coach, we need to offer more money, but add a stipulation of "If you go more than two years with 3 or less wins, we can fire you"

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but in most cases assistants are on year to year contracts except for coordinators sometimes having 2 year contracts.

And the list of coaches you're going to get who have agents willing to allow that clause is small. Like they're busy this week with high school playoffs small.

The contract was actually smart. Look at how much money we are saving!

Rhoads will earn $200,000 for each year the Cyclones win seven or more regular-season games. He'll receive $100,000 for reaching a bowl game and if the Cyclones finish in the Top 25.
Rhoads is due $250,000 if Iowa State wins or shares the Big 12's regular-season title

the "one more chance!" mentality is depressing. Can we handle another 365 days of this? Thats 365 days recruiting and training of inept players we can't get back. Giving a football coach one more year is a HUGE investment. The loss of revenues of paying fans is part of all this too.

So by waiting until after 2015 to fire him only saves Pollard 750k? If so, I don't think you wait another year, just do it now.

That's why I said offer more money. Like $4 million, instead of the embarrassing amount we offer now.

Also, I'll be Iowa States next head coach with that plan.

I had a top 50 recruiting class my first year in NCAA '14 in Hiesman mode.

Top 25 year 2

Top 10 year 3

Won the BCS National Championship year 5. All CPU.

So the difference between firing him in December and next December is $1.05 million? Sounds like money well spent right now.

The stands being completely empty by the end of the 3 quarter today showed that apathy has set in. That is not a good sign for Jamie Pollard.

If we lose out, I don't see how we can afford to keep Rhoads?

Actually only a net gain of $450K because of the $300k retention bonus due Feb. 15. A decision to do something after this year versus waiting a year to make an assessment wouldn't be due to finances.

Btw im with the end of 2015 crowd. We have alot of talent on the offense coming back gaining more experience, hopefully a new defensive coordinator. If he can win with that he never will
