So who is gong to be the sports director at channel 5? In the last two weeks, they have lost there sports director, and one of there lead sports reporters. What I like about channel 5 is that they cover the Cyclones and high school sports better then the other channels.

When your sports director leaves to take a morning anchor job in Omaha, that tells me the writing is on the wall.

Problem no owner will put up money to get good experienced talent for their news team. They always have good young talent but once they get experience they leave. It doesn't help they go against two very good news casts in 8 and 13.

Without knowing if you're serious, anchors make significantly more than the folks in sports. Z saw a better opportunity to make better money and advance his career and he took it. As simple as as that.

I heard WOI has one of the worst ratings for any newstation in the country. IIRC, the rating for KCCI is like 9, WHO is 8,..WOI is .2 (yes the decimal before it is correct). Virtually nobody watches WOI.

I really liked Dave Z, and will miss him in this market. Hope he makes it back here some day. Who else left?

I honestly have no idea what the pay structure wound be in the news world, but I find it hard to believe that a Sports Director makes less then a morning anchor. I'm sure the ceiling is higher if he is able to work his way up. I would also doubt that he took a pay cut, especially since he had a kid a few weeks before he moved.

That being said, my point was that Chanel 5 is a sinking ship, and I'm sure the main reason Dave and Joey left was because of that.

I could see him wanting to take a job with better hours. Being a sports anchor at a TV stations means lots of late hours and probably missing a lot of time with your kids (especially when they hit school age).

Until you get to Keith Murphy level and have been around for a lot of years, Anchors definitely make substantially more money than sports reporters/directors.

Like I said, I don't claim to know how news people get paid, but if true, I'm somewhat surprised (not arguing you're wrong). However, I still think the main reason they left was to void the sinking ship. No insider information, just my assumption.

Too bad because ISU was always given first coverage in all sports on channel 5. I only turn to 8 and 13 when the hawks lose just to hear the meltdown and excuses. Sad to see these guys go.

WOI's ship has been sinking forever, for some reason they have always been the lowest rated news by a mile, so I don't even know if you can say they were jumping a sinking ship, as I am not sure it ever left the dock.

I remember when KANSas getting 0's. There were some heated times with them blatantly just copy and pasting stories from KCRG and KWWL. My favorite was when there was some kind of farming accident in eastern Benton county. KGAN never went out to it but bought video off of some guy showing KCRG driving up and ran a story about the competition being slow or something like that.

I don't know if WOI still has a crappy set/signal if so that is your first sign they don't want to invest any money.
