HyVee fuel saver card

I don't do much shopping at HyVee because the stores now cost upwards of $20 million apiece. I understand coolers/freezers can be expensive but when 75% of your store should be metal shelves, something is wrong.

They have to recoup those costs somehow (by charging more) and I'm not going to contribute that much to it.
HyVee's in my opinion are over diversifying but it gets people in the doors.
I can be in an out of Fareway/Aldi's a lot quicker and cheaper for most things.

That much building by itself isnt cheap though either.And they can make up for most of it by increasing the volume of stuff they sell (which they do), its not like the average hyvee is selling the same amount of stuff the average fareway is.

A new aldi is coming into the jordan creek area though, may drop in there from time to time for smaller trips.

I see your point but I'm guessing some of these stores do a million dollars a week in sales compared to your average small store doing less than 200k . Also a lot more profit in the non-food aisles. I wonder how much cheaper a old small hyvee store is then a new one? Maybe it is a lot more but I have a feeling if you just stick to the grocery only aisles, it's not much different. I know when I worked at hyvee many years ago the most profitable stores were some of the small town ones. With all that said, if you want cheap you're not going to beat Aldi's.

I actually avoid the Ankeny Hy-Vee because they never have enough checkout lanes open when I'm there (and sometimes they're all open and it's still not enough).

The 2nd Hy-Vee appears to have helped with the pressure at the "in-town" Hy-Vee.

I get 13 mpg in my truck when filling at Caseys.
I get 22 mpg in my truck when filling at Amoco.
I get 39 mpg in my truck when I use a non-ethanol blend.
When I fill-up my diesel Volvo at Amoco my Volvo produces fuel. That's the only way to go.

Most Target groceries are a lot cheaper than HyVee. One in particular is PF Changs forozen meals. $9.99 at HyVee. $6.99 at Target.

I don't live in Iowa, so I can't comment on the Hy-Vee card, but I'm assuming it's similar to what Jewel and Dominicks did here, get them to spend an extra $50 in the store, to save $5 on gas? And $5 is being generous. Usually my wife was saving around 10 cents a gallon or so. A whopping $1.50 on a fill up. And you had to buy special items to get the credits.

The only thing I notice is the decrease in MPG because of ethanol. My car requires the mid-tier gas, which here in Iowa is the ethanol blend. I probably get close to 3-5MPG less.

I got gas once for $.01 per gallon (it won't go to free). That one was a little extreme, we are typically closer to a $2 or so discount. I wish the discounts didn't expire after 30 days because we can go about 6 weeks between fill ups during the summer.

Its a true story. I drive a bit older car and have a 23 mile (one way) commute to work. The difference is unbelievable when I go with name brand fuel...

What?!? As a fellow Ankenite, I can tell you that hardly any women work in our neighborhood, and they go during the week.

Since they built the new store in Urbandale, I've been doing most of my shopping at Fareway except for things I can't find there. Probably saving 20-30%. Produce is 15-100% higher at HyVee.

If you look at the ads, you'll notice that most of the items that have duel savings aren't as cheap as the week before.
