Just a random thought, but the common theme at the Big 12 media days is QB competition (7 or 8 of the 10 teams) For the first time in the CPR era, we don't have one.

How much of an advantage does this give to us over the other teams if any?

go watch CW's interview with Jeff Woody. They discuss this and it worth the watch.

Already did, hence the thread, but I was thinking about this even before the interview.

Re: Big 12 QB conterversary

is sammy can throw like he did at kansas we'll be fine. if his nerves get the best of him we'll have this discussion 4 times this season.

Re: Big 12 QB conterversary

Alright, spelling error fixed. Feel better spelling police? BTW, I suck at spelling.

Just having some fun :)

No problems, back on topic. I honestly think it's one of the few advantages we have over most of the Big 12 teams this year if Sam can do his job. They will hopefully be in our shoes the last two years, and HOPEFULLY we can sit back and enjoy having Sam as our clear cut number 1

I hope Sam comes out with better timing and chemistry with the WRs. I didn't like the fact he scrambled and missed a ton of open looks in games and the spring game. I am sure with better protection this year, I hope we see a big improvement there.

Who knows why people want to attack on that kind of thing yet if you checked them they may ( for instance ) not know the difference between to and too. Have you tried I-spell?

I REALLY hope that the line gives better protection this year, but for some reason I just don't know. I thought last year would be a good year for the line and they struggled a lot, especailly toward the end of the season and the bowl game.

I'm not sure of the teams being listed as having a controversy, but Tech doesnt have one. Michael Brewer will be our starter, and there really isnt abquestion about that.

Most coaches already know, but just dont want to announce it til the fall.

There are different levels of QB "controversy". It seems pretty common for a team to wait until the fall to name the starting QB. As KingBling mentioned, many coaches already know, but just don't want to announce it.

What made ISU's QB controversy last year less common (and in a bad way) was that the QB competition continued throughout the season. The QB had to essentially re-win the starting spot after every game. Jeff Woody mentioned this as well in his interview, where he said that Barnett and Jantz were never comfortable because they were worrying about making mistakes. I rather doubt that all 7 or 8 of the Big 12 teams that haven't announced a starting QB are going to be anywhere close to that kind of situation.

I was rather surprised Woody spoke that candidly about the Jantz/Barnett situation. I'm glad he did, because IMO, the way ISU handled that situation was not good.

To be fair, it was a lose-lose situation. If you keep the QB in and he continues to suck, you get blasted. If you put in the new QB and he does great, your a hero, but then the next week he sucks worse than before. It was a vicious cycle.

Also - Didn't we have some stat where we won every game when we switched the starting QB from the week before?

The issue is whether the QB shuffling (and constant threat of QB shuffling) itself is one of the causes of the bad play. If it is, then there is likely no hope of breaking the vicious cycle by continuously changing QBs, since the continuous changing is a contributor to the bad play.

It's quite amazing we even made a bowl game last year with three different starting QBs. How many teams can claim that?

You'd expect it to be better this year with a go-to guy, but who is really going to be shocked if we look like a different offense every game just like last year. I think we'll see some games where Sam looks like a Heisman-caliber player but others more reminiscent of Barnett's final drives against Kansas State.
