Sepp Blatter to request 2022 World Cup played during the winter.

Bad idea. That would really mess up the league schedules for club teams. Plus I want to do more basketball watching in the winter anyways.

If you didn't want the World Cup played in the middle of the dessert in the middle of the summer maybe you shouldn't have taken all of that cash under the counter to award to a horrible location such as Qatar.

With the amount of money on the line in the Euro leagues I wouldn't be shocked to see some clubs preventing their players from leaving. Remember this isn't until 2022 so player contracts for 2022 aren't written yet. If I'm giving someone the kind of money those guys make I'm writing into their contract that they are forbidden from missing any match due to participation in the world cup.

Very good point. I didn't think of that.

It really wouldn't screw up League Schedules that much. Most European Leagues take a 2-2.5 week break late Dec thru early Jan. Only the EPL plays games thru the holidays. The World Cup takes about a month to 5 weeks, if the EPL started early August (or 2-3 weeks earlier) in WC year's they'd still be done early June.

2nd the European teams are the ones that have been screaming for Winter WC forever.

3rd the Qatar WC shouldn't interfere with much basketball watching. I expect CST times for 2022 WC to be 5 am 7:30 am and 10 or 11 am on days with 3 matches and days with 2 matches 7 or 8 am and 10 or 11 am

I don't think FIFA would let that happen.

I agree 100%....are we supposed to believe no one had the foresight of realizing it's hot as hades in the middle east during the summer? Cash is the new God of earth.

Will never happen, the clubs and leagues would never allow it.

FIFA should be worried about next years World Cup first, there is a lot of potential for a disaster.

well, fifa really would not be able to do anything if the big leagues ie bpl, la liga, serie a, bundesliga and the french league all decided they wanted no part of it. as for the world cup being held in qatar in the winter, it is not a bad idea as the weather is incredible their during that time (i spent last winter there and i absolutely loved it), but the problem arises from the qataris promising that the world cup would be held during the summer time and that they would build air conditioned stadiums to deal with the heat.

My uncle was just there in Brazil and he asked everyone he met (including the customs official) if Brazil was ready for the World Cup and they ALL said "no". Most of them even said "I don't even know about the Olympics either".

He should be fired for letting the WC go to QATAR. A lot of other soccer nations that deserve it before QATAR

Its not the big clubs call of whether they let players go, its the players themselves who choose whether to show up. Few players flake out on their national team, especially for the World Cup. Unless every player turns into Roy Keane. Its more likely to have indoor stadiums, underground stadiums, temporary fields, or underwater football.

That being said, almost all the impact players in 2022 will be on the junior national teams currently. So of course there will be no contracts to enforce. This will get alot more press in a few years time.

This. It is not like the Word Cup of Soccer needs the bag of cash. It is the most important sporting event in the world.

From the article

“There is still enough time. I will bring this up to the executive committee,” he said. “If this World Cup is to become a party for the people, you can’t play football in the summer.”

I think having it hosted in a country that doesn't allow alcohol already killed that idea.

Can you imagine if right in the middle of the NBA season the big stars left their teams for a month or two to go play in the Olympics? There's no way this will fly.
