Official 2014 Recruiting thread

I'd say the fact he made the trip back to Ames from Nebraska to talk more with the coaches says a lot. We're in good shape but he has a ton of big 10 offers and he is in big 10 territory so it'll surprise me if he picks us in the end.

Ok, I've got to ask a question of those that have a little more experience with recruiting. I like the fact that we are getting a bunch of recruits recently that are "All-In" and I'm happy to have them but how does this work with holding out spots for your other targets like Elmore and Jones. Obviously you have to put out more offers then you have spots for but what if all the sudden you get like 15 commits. Do the coaches put a recruiting "hold" on for certain positions or total numbers? It just seams that at some point you can't accept everyone.

I would think that the coaches have told the players,in most cases, "All right,we're offering five of you guys, and will take the first one who commits". In the case of Kodanko, they've likely filled the "snag a big right tackle" need for the class. As far as the other guys, they're likely taking more than one RB or tight end in the class--and with a guy like Jones, you hold a place forhim in any case.

Does that help?

What they're really doing is filling out a framework, so that they can concentrate recruiting efforts on quality at a few specific other positions later.

This will be another smallish class I think--around 20. It kind of surprises me they are accepting all these comittments when known top targets are still on the list. In any case, there will definitely be 2 TE and possibly up to 3 RB in this class, probably only 2-3 OL. Of course this is all subject to change so don't hold me responsible when I'm wrong.

A scholarship offer has no obligation to be honored. Things can change very shortly after an offer that may make that offer virtually null & void. Communication is the key.

Any updates on the Rivals challenge and specifically Lazard? I went to the Notre Dame site and some stuff about a couple of their other guys but silent here.

Not a whole lot in that video but does show Lazard making two pretty good catches against Marvin Tell (2015) and the #5 DB Jalen Tabor. Just wondering how he did. The CR site has a headline saying he didn't impress but it doesn't really matter. He is a Top 10 talent and would be awesome to watch in a Cyclones uniform. Just would be nice for him and ISU to rub a #1 in others face once in awhile. Also, that video shows a catch by Joe Mixon (apparently rated 6.1 5* RB) and  dude looked like the road runner.

Agreed. I was assuming that we would sign 2 RBs and 2 TEs in this class. I think the staff holds out to see what happens with Jones and Elmore before they let anyone else sign at those 2 positions. As for OL, we have had pretty good luck recruiting them the last few classes, so the need is not as much this year. I think we sign 2 more OLs. We got the big tackle, now I think we go after a guard and hopefully Morrison at center. DE I don't think is that big of a need this year either. Just look at the last few classes. We are loaded up with young DEs, some of whom have moved to the inside. LB is still a position that concerns me.

Going to quibble a bit with this--after all,the class missed on Suttles last year. And as things currently stand, Willie Scott, David Irving, Cory Morrissey and Rodney Coe will all have completed their eligibility before any members of the current class come off redshirts. Given how CPR is constantly upgrading talent everywhere, I'd be a bit surprised if he doesn't take 2-3 defensive ends.

2-3 was what I was thinking as well, but that number is low compared to the last few years. That's what I meant when I stated that DE wasn't as big of a need as in the past.

Gotcha. I was also going to say that I think they'll be looking for quality and athleticism first and foremost, instead of just numbers.
