I feel like every year they get worse and worse. Claritin D not even doing much good anymore. That little pollen is having way too much impact on my daily life. I've heard of some people having success with acupuncture. Wondering if anyone here has tried that before. Also see some info about cutting out sugar and milk from diet can help. Pretty much willing to try anything at this point...well...almost anything.

It's freaking awful this year. Mine haven't been very bad the last several years, and this year is awful.

I find that Zyrtec works a lot, lot, lot better than Claritin. However, go to Sam's Club and get it for way cheaper.

I wanted to get in and get an allergy shot before I head off on a work trip this afternoon, but I couldn't make it.

How long do the allergy shots last?

It's a little more complicated than "this lasts three months." :( Here's a pretty good link - they sort of have to build them up in your system, and you're supposed to be on them a while.

Allergy Shots

This is the first winter that my allergies did not go away. I really have no clue what is causing them at this point. My doctor suggested it may be my dog. But I went to Vegas on April first and they did not go away at that point. I have been thinking of looking into other options so I don't have to put up with this year round.

My biggest allergy is to dust, hands down, so that one goes year-round. Trees and grass are my two main environmental ones, as well as pollen - I think the delayed spring this year is making those harsher for some reason, in my totally unscientific opinion.

I switched from Allegra-D to Flonase this spring and so far, so good. I was outside pretty much all day yesterday with no issues.

I second the suggestion of a nasal steroid like Flonase. It is also available as a generic now so it is much cheaper than it used to be although it still requires a prescription. I can only describe my experience with Flonase as "life changing."

My wife and kids still use oral antihistamines. A Target pharmacist told me he'd suggest rotating them yearly. Take Claritin one year, Allegra the next, Zyrtec the next and so on. He said some people feel like their allergies develop a resistance to one or the other and rotating seems to help with that. Just passing it on...

I took allergy shots for 10 years and my allergies aren't as bad today as they were in the beginning. I still have to take an occasional Claritin, but that is about it. I'm allergic to grass, trees, flowers, and dust.

I don't get spring allergies... just in the fall. In the past I've found the shot and a prescription strength steroid spray work the best.

I use Fluticasone Propionate Spray right now. Only used it three times last fall. Cleared me right up.

I have found that you need to switch up the allergy medicine every so often- I believe that your body becomes used to the medication you are using and it looses its effectiveness. Switching medications confuses your body and allows the medicine to keep working.

Also- for those that take pills- since most all of the medications provide 24hr relief take them at night before you go to bed so then when you wake up in the morning the medication is already working and you don't feel like hell waiting for the medication to take effect if you take your medication in the morning.

I tried clariton-d for the first time a month ago. I buddy gave me one for my head cold stuffiness. Allergy meds typically dont do squat for me but.....wow. I have never seen life so vividly, i mean I could have partied for 3 days with no sleep. Colors were brighter, i could hear a pin drop. Super powers I had. Then I realized it was a 12 hour deal and I took it at 4pm. I laid in bed all night and couldnt sleep. Sonofa.

I was back in Iowa visiting family this weekend and my allergies hit me like a ton of bricks. I get a prescription for Nasonex during the worst stretches in the Spring and Fall and that seems to work well. For a quick fix, I've always been a Claritan user, though it doesn't seem to help as much as it used to. I've also heard the advice about rotating, so maybe it is time to switch to Zyrtec.
