Block vs charge call needs some serious love in the college game. Right now it encourages lazy defense. You don't'have to commit to guarding a driving player until after he leaves his feet, them simply slide over and take the "charge"! I don't even like Cuse, but they got jobbed multiple times down the stretch.
Another interesting tidbit: This will be the third time that a #1 seed has played a #4 seed in the Championship Game. All 3 times Rick Pitino has coached the #1 seed. HoopsTournament.Net: Final Four Postgame Facts
That's pretty fascinating on its own.
Didn't Michigan beat Loyola Marymount. I seem to remember them having the sad task of ending the run.
My last ones of the night: Louisville and Michigan have to combine for more than 250 points in the championship game to avoid being the lowest scoring tournament (average score) in the shot-clock era. The only time a tournament game has had that many points was when Loyola Marymount defeated Michigan 149-115 in 1990. The most combined points in a Championship Game is 182 in 1978 when Kentucky defeated Duke 94-88. (Side fact: Duke has allowed the 3 highest scores in championship game history.) The most combined points scored in the last 3 championship games is 126. The 6 teams have averaged 56.7 points in the last 3 championship games.
Also if neither team scores 100, it will only be the second tournament in the shot-clock era where no team scored at least 100 (other was 2006). The only time a team has scored a 100 in the Championship game was 1990 by UNLV.
The lowest-average-score fact does not surprise me — this was a noticeably offense-inept tournament.
Almost every tournament has a muddied-up game here & there — you might even see teams that average 70-plus playing a 59-54 game. But this season, almost nobody scored more than 80 -- there weren't even any early-round, high-seed 94-60 games.
Speaking of seeds, Louisville played #16, #8, #12, #2, #9, and a #4Another interesting tidbit: This will be the third time that a #1 seed has played a #4 seed in the Championship Game. All 3 times Rick Pitino has coached the #1 seed. HoopsTournament.Net: Final Four Postgame Facts
Too much length for Burke. I thought he would struggle. Michigan did the right thing. Got it to their post at the top of the lane and make a play from there. Championship game should be fun to watch, Burke will be going up against smaller guards and should have a much better game. Michigan matches up with Louisville, should be a great game.Thought Burke would be able to pick apart Syracuse, but they contained him well.
Great games today.
Sure looked like it.
